Yep, great comp, big thanks to Steve and all my opponents who were great to play.
Big ups to the Brits and Dan for traveling all that way down under.
Got to play Dave, Hammy and Dan and all were fun games and fantastic opponents.
The only dispute I had was with Dave R, and considering he was arguing he needed 5's to hit my troops and I was arguing he only needed 4's it could hardly be considered serious
Point of note, he did only need 4's so I was right
So are we all off to Hog's Breath for dinner or what???

Just like to add my thanks to the convention team and to all my opponents. I had a great time and shock horror also managed four historical ot at least in theme matchups.
I managed to 'submarine' in 6th place all event (well after round 1 anyway). Going in to round 6 I had played all of the top five players apart from Dave Ruddock and 'beat' each of them about 12-8. All the practice of playing against armies with loads more knights than I had meant that when I faced a carbon copy of Sean's army (which I played in round 2) in the last round I could try a cunning plan which this time worked.
In round 5 the cunning plan was a flank march that never turned up but had it done so I suspect I would have won the game. The round 6 cunning plan was for my army of light horse, cavalry and knights to fight in the mountains of Serbia which worked pretty well with the only losses in my army being the result of a couple of unfortunate sets of dice where I was expecting to win or at least hold and one BG of knights being traded for one of my opponents knight BGs.
The odd thing was the lack of longbow armies, perhaps that is the next itteration in NZ. I would have been very happy against pretty much all of my opponents with either a longbow army or even something like Classical Indian or Christian Nubian.

Just like to repeat most of the comments above - superb comp, well organised by Steve.
Thanks to all my opponents - Ian Sharp, Ross Dawe, Anthony Winter, Shaun Drummond, Richard Stacey and Paul Rattray, all were excellent games played in the best spirit.
After having played four games against Australians amassing a total of 89.2 points and two games against New Zealanders amassing 7.6 points, then seemingly I need to play more Australians and less New Zealanders
Thankfully, I didn't have to play a Brit this time around, but Shaun has pulled one back and is interested in levelling the series at Britcon this year.

Turns out there are a few fine points.
1) You have to win impact.
2) When you are lucky enough to win melee, your opponent needs to fail a test.
3) losing something like 9-10 generals over the course of the comp was....
My dice were so bad I literally donated them to the Umpire. Things improved to a respectable level after that. crawling pathetically back up to 12th out of 32.
I will review the film of the games on the flight home, but I'd say the first day, i got punished by totally not expecting the army configurations I would encounter. That effected my deployment significantly and i was in jeopardy out of the gate. But i brought it back with two lancers on one. Apparently 8 dice to eventually 2 is not a winning combo!
But it was a great event. Great umpire. Great country. Great opponents. You all stink for not attending.
I did manage to educate a large number of people who said "What or who are the Xi Xia?" Answer their claim to fame was they were the first nation totally destroyed by the Mongols.

Awesome comp, thanks to Steve for running a smooth operation.
Was very interesting playing a Later Serbian army which was referred to as "carbon copy of Shauns list" (more than once). Weak.
My second round opponent was Glen Noonan....also playing Later Serbian, was great to break his army. And to come soooo close to breaking Shauns Later Serbian in the 5th round. Pity the results posted did not reflect the actual results on the table. Serves me right for being so casual.
Thanks to all the travellers making the effort to come all this way to get in some games.

Very true, from what you said to me it was Shaun who copied your army but as I played him first my posting read a lot better the way I wrote itLycanthropic wrote:Awesome comp, thanks tWas very interesting playing a Later Serbian army which was referred to as "carbon copy of Shauns list" (more than once).

The two armies were not quite identical in htat there was an OOM change. Either way the fact that yours wasa the third army with 4 BG of knigts that I had to play with my puny 2 BG of knights meant that by the time we met I had just about gotten the hang of how to deal with that time of list.
It is nice to see that your final placing was better than initially indicated.
Niks prediction for my army was way out (Saka...... will struggle to finish off some opponents). I struggled to even get winning draws, but I blame my opponents for that rather than my army, they all played well and mostly neutralised my shooting. Although I feel that rallying 5 of the 7 BGs I routed was slightly excessive, especially as his army only had 11 BG to start with.
But I had six fun games, 5 against opponents I've never met. Going out on the piss with Dave Ruddock (who is a thoroughly nice guy) was also a highlight.
My prediction for the future............Elephants. As far as I know no Bg of Elephants was destroyed or routed in the entire tournament, and with all those knights and lancer cavalry they have potential.

next big comp
Well, all of the Aussies (bunnies to some) enjoyed the comp no end, and are actively planning to turn up in some force to the UK next year (or maybe even later this year, but less likely) to lend support to Brett and Glenn (who travel each and every year).
Training required (in no particular order) will be
1 - better use of light troops
2 - better use of terrain
3 - better ability to drink jugs with Dave Ruddock
OK, so some have #3 covered.
Was also great to meet Dan and Hammy (and Mrs Hammy) - unfortunately I didn't play well enough to play any of the above, but next year.....

don't think so -hammy wrote:So who exactly are the Nelson boys and did I actually manage to play them all?fatismo wrote:Bank error in your favor collect $200, or in this case 4 placings, gratz Mark
Seems the boys from little old Nelson made a good showing, and yes I am claiming Shaun, even though he doesn't live here anymore
Josh Gardner
Richard Stacey
Mark Holland
Shaun Drummond
I think are all the Nelson mob.

I have to say that overall the standard of play of all my opponents was very high and I had to work very hard for my results. I honestly can't think of any genuine errors made and only a small handful of moves that I thought were ill considered. Fortunately for me I was able to exploit most of the ill considered moves and ride my luck for the rest of things.
To give our overseas visitors some perspective; Nelson is a city at the top of the South Island, its total population is less than 45,000. So on a per capita basis Nelson probably has the densest population of FOG players in the world, and also the most successful by miles . Leaves Manchester in the shade sorry Dave
