Assigning Helmut to PzAbt 402. While I usually like this type of hero on a Stuka, this time I will use him on a tank given the good work PzAbt 502 and Albert Kerscher do against opposing forces.

Highlights

Image
With the new combat prediction system I thought for a second I'll be given command over Italian and Bulgarian forces as well. Unfortunately not, I'll have to rely on the AI to do the job right.

Image
Good news - some extra prestige gained by encirclement never hurts. Bad news - not providing AA cover to 21 cm artillery always hurts.

Image
Pionier Bataillon 34 is now inflicting more casualties against infantry so the unit awards speed up.

Image
I./ZG 6 gains an award trying to assist Bulgarian air force against bombers. Unfortunately Bulgarian planes seem to have other targets in mind and thus do not contribute much, leaving the bombers alive for a few more turns.

Image
I'm glad the prestige pool is separate this time. Italian tanks seem to be obsessed with high ground and end up in a vulnerable position on the enemy turn.

Image
Bulgarian tanks in "I will survive" mode. they refuse to replace losses and just sit there for the whole battle with 1 strength and by some miracle make it until the end.

Image
Finally, encirclement of the forces near Italian positions is complete. This was the more urgent one, as Italian army did not manage as good as the Bulgarian counterpart.

Image
Even more good captures. I'm not using them, but at least it helps with prestige and allows to deal with nasty heroes.

Image
Kortisa is taken after heavy fighting. The defenders there mean business.

Image
Encirclement part 2 is complete, time to help my Bulgarian allies.

Image
Possible side effect of the "invisible" artillery support bug. Enemy artillery bombards my guns despite the fact they have no way of knowing the unit is there, beyond spotting range.

Image
Ending the mission with an award for my best infantry unit.

Summary:

Equipment Captured:

Cruiser Mk.IV - 8 (up to 12)
QF 25 pdr - 5 (up to 12)
Cruiser Mk.II CS - 8 (up to 8 )
105mm M.1925/27 - 7 (up to 7)

Final Prestige: 26752 (up 563)
CP gained: 4 (up to 9)

Overall:

This mission had potential to be my favorite so far. It's a large map with three distinctive battle groups, presence of Italians and Bulgarians along with the potential to encircle huge amounts of enemies and capture their equipment and with proper setup this can be a huge amount of it. The only thing holding the scenario back was rather incompetent behavior of Italian and Bulgarian forces. They were strangely passive, sometimes did not replace losses despite having the prestige and instead positioned themselves next to the enemy right after retreating earlier (especially true for tanks) as well as constantly attack fortifications, something I noticed in SCW already. Compared to 7th Panzer Division in 1940 they made more questionable moves - possibly since their AI was set to a lower level? Despite the AI issues I still enjoyed the scenario greatly, once again it does something entirely different with the army setup and terrain offered.

I loved this mission. 5 Freaking armies on one map! Huge encirclements, buffoonish allies...what's to hate!

AO 1941 - Thermopylae

Image
Interesting offer - I take it just out of curiosity, but seeing how apparently it is not possible to get all CP awards this time, I'll have to be a bit conservative with my choices later, especially since I'd like to get all heroes, but not necessarily all equipment this time. Still, this first basic run is partially to test the waters and see what's available for those more restrictive AARs.

Starting Prestige (after purchases and replacements): 28506

Hero:

Image

Matthias represents an end to a really good hero streak. Still, Panzerjäger Abt 212 did not have any heroes, so I might as well use him there.

Highlights

Image
A line of Stuka bombers makes most problems go away. If in doubt, add more Stukas.

Image
Wow, that's some serious strength. Fortunately encirclement will deal with them just fine.

Image
AufkAbt 11 back in action and gaining some anti-infantry experience.

Image
Paratroopers and Luftwaffe work well together, cutting off British options to retreat.

Image
Now this will be useful for the Panzermon run for sure, the stats are quite good on these vehicles.

Image
That's probably the first time I have seen such a massive concentration of enemy heroes, that sometimes well match my own forces.

Summary:

Equipment Captured:

Matilda II - 12 (up to 74)
Daimler Dingo - 4 (up to 11)
40mm Bofors - 6 (up to 17)
QF 25 pdr - 3 (up to 15)

Other Equipment Gained:

Cruiser Mk.II CS - 29 (up to 37)
Bf 109Z - 19 (up to 19)

Final Prestige: 28602 (up 96)
CP gained: 2 (4 used, 7 remaining)

Overall:

A change of pace over the previous mission, Thermopylae plays out more like a puzzle scenario rather than a regular battle. Retreating unit cannot mount any resistance, but hero heavy experienced ones that guard the passes and support each other well with various abilities. This requires a bit of thinking to find the best way to deal with, as usual approaches do not work as well. That's refreshing and presents a different type of challenge to the usual mission types and also makes me think what insane hero combinations we will see in the future to stand up to the player's experienced forces.

Bralos was much harder for me than the pass itself. No corridor to bypass, just experienced, overstrength units with good heroes well dug in rough terrain.

AO 1941 - Operation Mercury

Image
I will take this offer just for collection purposes since it will be strange to just stick with the Bf 109Z, but that's as far I go when it comes to taking things I don't plan to use until later AARs.

Starting Prestige (after purchases and replacements): 29744

Hero:

Image
With no particular plan in question, I put the new River Assault hero on PzAbt 511 allowing the Neubaufahrzeug to potentially be useful later in the war.

New Units Commissioned:

Fallschirmjäger Reg 6 - Fallschirmjäger

One more Fallschirmjäger unit should be good enough to divide them into two groups of three and take closely situated objectives so that both groups can easily rejoin in case of trouble.

Highlights

Image
Ha, I knew it was worth filling in the slots with paratroopers and planes since there's no way Italian Navy stands a chance, no matter what Wagner says about the odds.

Image
Fighters are busy immediately. I almost wish I took more than four.

Image
Good call Wagner, I prefer my experienced units don't sink to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.

Image
Fallschirmjäger Reg 1 gains a useful award. This unit is miles ahead of other Fallschirmjäger regiments as I usually just employ one for some very specific usage.

Image
Another award, courtesy of Royal Navy ship cannons...

Image
... but Luftwaffe now rebases and comes to the rescue.

Image
I almost loose Galland. Spitfire Mk VB's are terrifying!

Image
With most ground targets now out of range I take revenge for Regia Marina. I might not sink many ships, but at least I'll get the message across.

Image
Amazing news for Panzermon times - I will finally have a chance to get more strategic bombers in that AAR.

Image
Galland is tu valuable to let go this time, but I will give him some alternative universe options, freeing him up in the Retrograde and Wunderwaffe runs and keeping also in the Panzermon run.

Summary:

Other Equipment Gained:

Spitfire Mk.II - 19 (up to 70)
Beaufighter Mk.IF - 19 (up to 48)
He 111Z - 19 (up to 19)
Stirling Mk.I - 29 (up to 29)

Final Prestige: 32656 (up 2912)
CP gained: 3 (5 used, 5 remaining)

Overall:

At first I thought I also might get control of auxiliary paratroopers, but it quickly became obvious they will be AI controlled and I must say I'm not opposed to this approach staying for good when it comes to cooperation with AI allies. They might sometimes make questionable moves (Fallschirmjägers kept breaking enemy encirclement if some juicy artillery appeared in range), but it does make the player more active and I really enjoyed being able to arrive with my planes to help support the troops. Fast Rebase on so many fighters was a godsend and I was also positively surprised ho useful my recon planes were - they detected the British fleet quickly and continued to monitor its movement, allowing my strategic bombers to discourage them from operating too close to the shores and thus not harass my Fallschirmjägers - once the ships got damaged they retreated west and north and were no longer a concern.

Offer to free up Galland was flavorful and unexpected. I'll be sure to mix and match such options for the added replay value.

Among other things, his is going to be the very first mission in my Panzermon run where I will have to get regular German infantry since there is no possible workaround this time. Since they all will be green troops and my air force will be limited, it's going to be an unusual situation for sure!

As for that Thermopylae comment - it's probably those two AA guns around the location that are the biggest annoyance. Rapid Fire/Low Altitude Attack one with extra Lethal Attack mows down fighters and tactical bombers like crazy while the large caliber one means it's hard to suppress anything with strategic bombers. 21 cm Mrs 18 with extra range from Elsa and two more heavy hitting artillery pieces are probably the best solution.

Re: AO Simple AAR - General Tassadar and his Little Tanks

Post by WalterTFD »

I didn't have too much trouble on my normal run. I retrained all my infantry (aside from my beloved Spaniards!) to jump men, and sent 6 units over. Bombers and fighters came across once we had the first airbase, and from there on things weren't too complicated.

I'm dreading this one on my 'clash of heroes' playthrough, I can't see any way to handle an auto-rout hero on a tank if one shows up here, they'll mow down my unsupported infantry like field mice under a lawnmower. Fingers crossed they don't get a good one.

AO 1941 - Undisclosed Location PO

Image
I cannot get both unless I saved CP earlier. Not a big issue here, but a shame for the Wunderwaffe run. However, I feel like Wunderwaffe AAR will be much more fitting place for Henschel's offer, so I'll go with Krupp suggestion due to the unlimited replacements.

Starting Prestige (after purchases and replacements): 32085

Hero:

Image
As long as I have planes without Fast Rebase I will never complain about these heroes. While there are a lot of better ones, the utility is great. Thus, Daniel joins IV./JG 61. Enemy planes will learn to respect my fighter force.

New Units Commissioned:

Panzerjäger Abt 203 - 10.5cm K Gepanzerte (Sfl.) - to join during the mission

Starting Army Composition:

I could make a case of getting my Sturmgeschütz here for quick gains, but since I'm such a huge StuG fan I'll end up with them deployed anyway in almost every mission, so other units that are less commonly used will benefit more.

Highlights

Agreed to that, an experimental AT gun will give some valuable firepower against Soviet tanks.

Image
Most of my units are in position, but rain slows down experience gain.

Image
I'm not going to copy the entire conversation, but that's a very interesting event with long term consequences.

Image
That's an easy approval. I have no use for the documents and the potential is huge.

Image
What's there to say? Of course it's a great chance.

Image
Soviet tanks are going to have a rough time!

Summary:

Other Equipment Gained:

Me 262A - 5 (up to 5)

Final Prestige: 32085 (no change)
CP gained: 0 (3 used, 2 remaining)

Overall:

Training scenarios are really useful! In this particular run I did not have that many units that would benefit, but still found a few and in my other ones where rotation is larger, this will have a greater impact. Also a lot of events stacked up here, which is a good idea, since then things like this do not distract from the gameplay in actual combat missions. I'm really glad that recons were provided for assistance, since rain was a constant issue and since it reduces accuracy, this did impact the amount of experience my units were able to gain.

Highlights

Image
PzAbt 401 reaches highest anti-infantry award possible.

Image
Tanks meet Herr Rudel.

Image
With Double Attack and Double Move on Rudel lighter BT-7 Soviet machines are basically defenseless.

Image
Since not many Soviet planes appear, I./JG 61 focuses on infantry instead.

Image
PzAbt 501 joins the anti-infantry club. Open terrain helps greatly.

Image
Some more awards, this time on PzAbt 412 that up to this point was mostly in reserve.

Image
Some Soviet planes manage to take off, but it's too late by that time.

Image
With Fast Rebase, IV./JG 61 joins the hunt of remaining air forces.

Image
Wow, that tank group looks intimidating!

Image
Happy to see more Spanish friends, they have proven useful and another battalion is more than welcome.

Image
Quite a few KV-1 tanks appear so I need to support my units and not overextend. There's still lots of time left.

Image
The best way to use that time is to capture some valuable equipment.

Summary:

Equipment Captured:

BT-7 - 4 (up to 4)
KV-1/40 - 36 (up to 36)
T-26 - 5 (up to 83)
37mm M1939 - 2 (up to 2)

Other Equipment Gained:

L6/40 Lf - 35 (up to 70)
38 M Toldi I - 35 (up to 65)
M14/41 - 35 (up to 35)
R-1 - 35 (up to 35)
Ca.135 - 35 (up to 35)

Final Prestige: 21288 (up 5030)
CP gained: 2 (up to 4)

Overall:

This mission reflects the initial stages of the invasion quite well, both in terms of gameplay and the overall picture. Quick progress of the German forces, element of surprise, impossibility to coordinate organized action over the entire fronts by the Soviets, but also fierce local resistance by determined troops often fitted not only with obsolete equipment, but modern kit that was equal, or even much better than German counterparts. I really like how vast the map is and how it showcases the local terrain. Scenario was easy overall with tough groups of enemies and I suspect this will be the case for the entire AO1941 on the Soviet front. Overall not too difficult missions, but with some powerful groups or side objectives that make it hard to accomplish them. Knowing I will need KV-1/40 early I started capturing them immediately as a top priority and even without Trophies of War managed to get quite a lot of them already.

That Envelopment hero is really powerful. I agree with you about this being a mission that reflects the story quite well. You really get the 'sweeping all before us' vibe from it, as you race across the map annihilating the enemy.

KV-1/40 - 14 (up to 50)
T-34/40 - 30 (up to 30)

BT-7A - 7 (up to 7)
122mm M1938 - 18 (up to 18)
76.2mm M1939 - 4 (up to 15)

Final Prestige: 28337 (up 6593)
CP gained: 2 (up to 9)

Overall:

Another quick paced scenario with the need to rush on vast open spaces and quickly run towards the objectives, but at the same time keep the enemy force encircled to avoid getting into trouble and stabbed in the back that any units that manage to slip through the cracks. Both objectives went well with the first thanks to mobile airfields and cover of Luftwaffe bombers and the second thanks to the AI cooperating well and not breaking the encirclement in pursuit of wounded units. Building the airfields is also a overall cool concept. It adds some tactical depth since placement is important and the fact that such airfields can be destroyed means keeping them safe will not always be obvious. The amount of vehicles to build these was more than enough. As for prestige gained, looks like my active pursuit of KV-1/40 tanks resulted in some extra unexpected captures as well. Funny enough my AI controlled allies forced one more KV tank unit to surrender, but since they use a separate prestige and capture pool I had to say goodbye to all those valuable parts - reminded me of SCW times.

I really liked how you get to work alongside the Army Group in this mission. Really helped to give the 'flying squad' vibe, where your army is the most elite section of a much larger force.

The airfield creation is also really cool, big thumbs up.

Finally, Wagner's presence on the battlefield, in this and other missions, is always an interesting choice that PC and PC2 don't usually go for. I don't hate it, though it feels a little more RPG than wargame to have special units for briefing characters. I hope we see more of that, very much 'peanut butter in my chocolate' in my book to mix rpg stuff with wargaming.

Highlights

Image
To think in 1939 these rocket launchers were such a valuable and rare capture. Guess now they will be really common.

Image
Wow, SdKfz 250/1 transports are actually quite powerful when dealing with some types of targets and make for true Panzergrenadiers that indeed often fought directly from their half-tracks.

Image
II./SG 7 acting in recon role happens to find a good target to bombard and quite a lot of Soviet troops awaiting in close terrain.

Image
Pionier Bataillon 34 gets attacked by three Soviet infantry units, but looking at the end result that was not the best decision on their end.

Image
With Smolensk surrounded, I can focus on side objectives and for now ignore the suppressed defenders.

Image
Lightning Attack on Rudel is so good. No AA fire can stop me from taking out the target I want dealt with.

Image
Final Approach towards Glinka while capturing some KV-1/40 tanks. Once that is done, my forces surrounding Smolensk can finish the job safely.

Summary:

Equipment Captured:

BT-7 - 12 (up to 16)
OT-133 - 4 (up to 17)
T-26 - 7 (up to 90)
KV-1/40 - 34 (up to 84)
KV-2 - 9 (up to 44)
T-34/40 - 11 (up to 41)
T-38 - 5 (up to 5)
BA-10 - 7 (up to 9)
AT-1 - 6 (up to 8 )
45mm M1937 - 5 (up to 11)
BM-13 Katyusha - 4 (up to 4)

Final Prestige: 37027 (up 5064)
CP gained: 4 (up to 14)

Overall:

One more large scale offensive, but this time with objectives to spice things up. Luckily, Smolensk is located in terrain that allows for a relatively straightforward encirclement as long as tanks can push through concentrated Soviet forces. Up north the path is rather narrow, so this helps keeping all units together, but down south there's a more wide front to cover. One thing that I would differently in retrospect is take one or two bridge engineers. What I failed to notice about the map is that the only river crossing later is in Smolensk itself and cannot be used if the bonus objectives are to be obtained first. Luckily I had my force spread equally between two sides, but if not, I might have gotten into trouble. In these few scenarios on the Eastern front I'm constantly reminded that bridge engineers can be really beneficial due to poor infrastructure and for just one core slot costs it's a bargain. I will have to look at maps more carefully. Lack of any serious enemy air presence is really helpful, but I do not suspect this will last forever and once it stops I'll be in for a shock...

Highlights

Image
Nothing like starting the mission with awards... for mobile airfields and strongpoints?

Image
A mobile force rushes from the northwestern part of the map to help trap the advancing Soviets using the way terrain looks here and taking advantage of the river.

Image
Good I had a few spare units that could prevent bridge engineers from setting up temporary river crossings.

Image
First part of the operation is a success. Attackers around Yelna are trapped and forced to surrender.

Image
However, a much larger force arrives south where I happened to deploy fewer units. Luckily Luftwaffe can seriously damage the incoming enemies.

Image
Since StuG units stay close to other formations almost all the time, they do get Skilled Support medals much quicker than other artillery.

Image
Another wave of Soviet forces attacks south of Yelna, but is surrounded like the previous one.

Image
Meanwhile further south combined firepower of my planes and artillery finally manage to deal enough damage to justify a full counterattack.

Image
Pionier Bataillon 33 receives an award after a rather poor decision by T-34/40 tanks to engage infantry in a forest.

Image
PzAbt 411 also receives an award, since new Flammpanzers further reinforce the unit's role versus soft targets.

Image
40 power strongpoints - "you shall not pass" in map design, since in earlier AO DLC those 20 power strongpoints could arguably be busted in a realistic time frame and have the players snooping around where they were not supposed to.

Summary:

Equipment Captured:

BT-7 - 12 (up to 28)
T-26 - 8 (up to 98)
KV-1/40 - 28 (up to 112)
T-34/40 - 5 (up to 5)
122mm M1938 - 4 (up to 18)
BM-13 Katyusha - 1 (up to 5)

Other Equipment Gained:

Bf 109Z - 26 (up to 45)

Final Prestige: 44214 (up 5757)
CP gained: 4 (4 used, 11 remaining)

Overall:

Desna river is no Ebro, but the similarity is not entirely incorrect. Both scenarios involve defending against an overwhelming amount of enemies behind river positions, but there are are multiple factors that make Yelna less of an issue. First of all there's the case of total air dominance, allowing the bombers to flatten any serious threats. Another important factor is that the enemy starts much further from the river, giving a few turns to prepare and engage them on preferable terms, as well as the units not being struck by massive artillery bombardment form turn one. Furthermore, the northwestern path gives perfect opportunity for encirclement, pushing the massive attacking force towards Desna and cutting them off. Since units at his point of the campaign deal much more damage overall, the fights are quicker and more intense, so the counterattack can be assembled more efficiently as well.

Wagner's vehicle saved! As for Wagner himself, who knows?

Image
Fallschirmjäger land to assist my ground forces...

Image
...and help create potential encirclement situations.

Image
Nice, my second Sturmgeschütz units gets the support accuracy bonus in the very next scenario after the first one does.

Image
PzAbt 511 might not be best at fighting other tanks, but all awards are welcome now that it has some chance for front line action.

Image
Oleh Dir's unit also does some great work.

Image
PzAbt 412 gets a Survivor award after moving too close to a city with no support.

Image
Interesting, I almost did not notice that PzAbt 511 did not have Steamroller yet.

Summary:

Equipment Captured:

KV-1/40 - 8 (up to 120)
T-34/40 - 7 (up to 53)
122mm M1938 - 4 (up to 18)
BM-13 Katyusha - 1 (up to 5)
57mm 1941 - 2 (up to 2)

Final Prestige: 44394 (down 11)
CP gained: 1 (up to 15) - I think I got the numbers wrong in the past scenario due to the points often getting awarded at the end of the missions.

Overall:

I did not notice this, but Gerhard Zimmermann from AufkAbt 21 was apparently KIA in one of the previous scenarios. While working on the list for Gomel I suddenly noticed the unit no longer has Field Repairs, but there was no message about him leaving the unit. Quick inspection of the hero roster revealed he is nowhere to be seen. Must have gotten bad luck while the unit was split, a side effect of doing this is that sometimes it can lead to loosing track of not having the hero anymore. Somehow fitting I noticed this in this mission... Quick inspection of saves revealed that this happened in the Smolensk scenario, during intense fighting near Yartsevo. He will be missed in the army, but at the same time it luckily did not happen to a more impactful hero and a lesson for the future, as things will only get more difficult.

Regarding Gomel, that is an interesting plot twist and the scenario is not too difficult, allowing me to use other troops and give many of the regular ones a break.

So if you have a unit with heroes, split it, and the half with the heroes dies... they die for permanent?
Because the 'unit' still exists... in the half that lives and also has no heroes assigned to it.

Probably unintended, but honestly I like it and hope it stays as a feature:

Splitting by it's very nature is a dangerous activity, it is the most dangerous kind: dividing your forces against the enemy. Obviously it comes with huge benefits of positioning and even more, so why not have a potentially extra big of risk factor on top?

Same thing happened to Edmon in his recent SCW campaign videos at one point with one of hist tanks. Normally if a unit is killed it's easy to notice, but with those split ones since there's always the option to reinforce the other half it can get missed, especially if the hero was not game changing, so it's not immediately visible form the unit's performance. I 100% agree that this is immensely flavorful and should stay even if it was not intended in the first place. Not only it adds realism to the game, it also is an argument against going too crazy with the "Power Four" of traits, adding that little bit of extra risk and balance to the game. The only thing I'd add is a note to the unit history about the soldier being KIA.

Trouble for our man Wagner!

Having units for briefing characters feels kind of RPG-esque, to me. I like it.

Looks like you are cruising along pretty well, Moscow coming up!

Final Prestige: 43992 (up 3)
CP gained: 5 (5 used up, 15 remaining)

Overall:

This was a bit of a strange mission. If I were to focus only on the basic objective of making contact with the other German force I could probably sneak a recon car through in record time and if it had Camouflage it would feel like running through an Oblivion dungeon under an invisibility spell just to avoid combat at high levels. Luckily, the mission also has bonus objectives to spice things up. While the elite units needed to be taken down were powerful, it seems I had a lot of luck here. The artillery just went into a river, tanks and ant-aircraft got caught in open terrain and the cavalry got ambushed by my tanks, all in a series of events I could only describe as coordinating poorly with the rest of the Soviet army. After crushing those nemesis level threats the rest was a matter of time, as the enemy force while large, is not too powerful compared to forces met in earlier missions. It would probably be more challenging on higher levels however, just because the AI allies might have a tough time with the Soviets having their accuracy boost and possibly it would end up being a race against time to prevent them from being wiped out.

Highlights

Image
Rudel helping my allied forces to advance quicker and safer.

Image
Meanwhile Fallschirmjäger land north to help secure key objectives...

Image
... but run into trouble. Fortunately my tanks are ready to assist soon.

Image
Triple hero Katyusha unit happens to accidentally get caught of guard by my recon cars and is quickly destroyed.

Image
Albert Kerscher's unit gets the highest anti-infantry award.

Image
Same for PzAbt 402 slightly later.

Image
Rapid Fire does not help much if the other unit gets to strike first.

Image
Kiev is now completely surrounded, but with very few good targets to capture.

Image
PzAbt 511 moves southeast to deal with any remaining Soviet forces, since with the defenders of Kiev cut off, there's no need to keep a large army there to finish the job.

Summary:

Equipment Captured:

KV-2 - 4 (up to 48)
BM-13 Katyusha - 3 (up to 26)

Other Equipment Gained:

KV-1/40 - 19 (up to 139)
BM-13 Katyusha - 18 (up to 26)
MiG-3 - 29 (up to 29)
Petlyakov Pe-2 - 26 (up to 26)

Final Prestige: 48511 (up 3729)
CP gained: 5 (4 used up, 16 remaining)

Overall:

Back to some prestige gains after a stalemate in the past two missions, all thanks to a huge encirclement of the forces around Kiev. Interestingly, this was mostly infantry surrendering, so I got almost no captured equipment overall. The Kiev scenario reminds me of the original mission from the base campaign, but the encirclement this time is more intentionally set up and also probably harder to do on a grand scale (but with proper positioning for sure achievable, I just did not feel like it's necessary since a more conventional approach would do just fine). I tried to be clever and use paratroopers, but they really got hit hard, surviving just barely and not really providing that much assistance. I'll continue trying out this strategy however in some missions where I see some potential, as it's high risk and potentially high reward. What is most important, I'm still in conditions where no Soviet planes appear despite the potential threat being there constantly, so not only bombers can operate freely, but paratroopers also can travel rather unopposed in the air. This air dominance is making things much easier each time.

This one really felt 'right' to me. You know? Battle of Kiev, massive encirclement, all easy so far, but the ever present threat of the Red Air Force's return and the constant talk about winter coming on gets you in the right mood.
