I was having same problem with Windows 7 64 bits, Radeon 4850 and 9.12 catalyst Drivers. I reverted to 16-bits colour in screen properties and the games does not flicker anymore. Anyway, there is a newer version of the catalyst drivers, 10.1.

About romans, all their units are OK, they make up for a fun game...I would choose Hastatii

Catch them up early, before they expand into Asia minor. Use cavalry to charge their undefended archers, your infantry is superior (expect for some swordmen, they were tough)

Just a question. No, you have to beat its garrison in open battle or leave. There wasn't too much siege warfare at this time, as long as I recall (they laid siege on cities sometimes: Thebes, Ilion...but open battles were more common and siege equipment wasn't developed)...anyway, I'm not an expert...
