Baron Wombat -- Re increasing difficulty, I'd recommend at least Admiral. I don't think you'll see much difference at General (and you may not see much at Admiral, I haven't tried that one yet).

Iain -- I don't know who you had proof read the manual but you should definitely NOT ever use them again. This thing is actually painful to read.

Select the fleet at Mizar and move it to Homam. Select tactical combat. I went to max speed but don't know if that makes a difference. Accept the result, then "back." The "auto zoom" should happen after a second or so.

I had a similar problem with strange shapes appearing. Try verifying the integrity of your game files on Steam.
