Question: What does the big green shield mean?

Hi, just bought the game and so far, loving it. But I've got a question... A few times, when targeting the bad guys, I get a large green outline of a shield. Sometimes it has one green block in it, sometimes two. So what does it mean? I'm guessing it indicates additional protection from cover, armou...
