I don't know it this has been answered yet fully, but here's my explanation.
Long term supression is delivered by: Artillery, Naval ranged units, Strategic Bombers.
It last until the end of the half-turn OR until the next "melee attack" the supressed unit receives.

I'm not competent enough to answer your question, but I can share my observations I collected up to this point.
1. The UI is not lying to you.
a) If it says zero casualties – it's zero casualties, even without full supression. Well, with the exception of rugged defence, which is still random.

Hi there, long time no hear. Well, apart from me fanatically watching youtube videos of Soren and Goose :D
I just blitzed through the vanilla campaign with Chess mode on (no random numbers) and I think its worth discussing for Ultimate mode. My reasoning? Re-rolls.

Initiative doesn't help when attacking ground targets as the ground units always fire first (I think the initiative is set to 99 and 0 or something that clearly says ground fires first) so you're better off keeping Lent as a fighter bomber where the initiative is helpful for assuring you get the ...

The AI has, just like the player, a certain pool of prestige to burn through. Sometimes it reinforces important targets, sometimes it does the "KV spam" as seen above, sometimes both. All of these make the player's task harder, which is the point of the whole thing.

As we encounter heavier russian armor, the "Get Rudel'd gift package" (get in - one shot - get out) doesn't work as well with the Bf110 as it does with a overstrength Ju 87 D or G.

Criticism has its place, but I find it to be overused.
My personal opinion is that no design decision in Panzer Corps 1 is so inherently flawed that it would merit criticism.

You don't really need to cross the canal en masse, though. A few units will suffice and targets on the other side are within bombardment/airforce range from your side of the canal.

The Italian Stuff is Good enough to go through the whole Afrika Campaign on Rommel and Field Marshall with a Decisive Victory in Every Scenario without using any German Unit (and that includes immediate Disband of all SE Units) except Scenario #1.

I played through AK again, this time with my suggested core setup.
Everything felt spot-on, except I'd take 2 Panzer II Flamm tanks instead of 1 HW infantry and 1 recon.
Having 3-4 AA units definitely a must.
The two italian SP artillery pieces we get for free are actually pretty powerful ...

I differ from the view that AK is different from the Russia campagn as to the tank-battles: quite opposite - both (wide open) terrains are ideally suited for tankbattles - in contrast to infantry battles.

Tiger I is my favourite, both in game and historically. It was a piece of elegant design, ahead of its time.
Although technically not tanks, to me the visually most stunning are Sd.Kfz.232 6-rad and 8-rad with their hexagonal geometric design. Forget jeeps - these just look badass

Edited the OP for clairty.
The StuG is the first AT that can actually hold it's own in enemy turn, but again, its use is limited. AK maps are very well made, and they require a really tidy end of turn. I don't trust AT guns to hold the line.
