They are all vertical but the base and hand positions are such that the top of the pikes are maybe 5 mm out of alignment between the two variants. And, as you know, 5mm can make quite a difference ;)

Quick question about stepping forward.

In the diagram base X has impacted BG A and base Y would contact A if it steps forward, however base Z will not contact A if it steps forward. Am I right in thinking that Z cannot move at all, and if Y were to lose contact with Z in stepping forward it can't ...

I hadn't noticed the requirement for "Other Companion Cavalry". I built my list from the Starter Army which also doesn't include them. Is the Starter Army also illegal, or am I missing something (quite likely as I'm a complete beginner)?
