Re: V2 Hoplites vs Spara Bara

Why do wargame designers seem to think that spear armies (Greeks and others) should meet bow armies like Persians on equal terms? Historically they did not. Spear armies consistently beat bow armies (and lancer cavalry). The problem for the spear was when they met more mobile armies like thracians (...

Re: Basing for 28mm figures

This is an issue that really needs to be addressed by wargame designers - previously assumed base sizes are way too small for the latest generation of 28mm figures. This is NOT about money. I paid to get my army painted and cost for the number of figures was not an issue. The problem is the bases ar...

Re: Technical issues

OK the App has now fully loaded and works fine. (Took hours. Even with broadband line).

Have you ever considered some advice warning people how long a download will take? Of course, you may lose business if you do :(

Re: Point revisions

I like the suggested changes for Unreformed infantry. At present he game works well with reformed vs reformed, or unreformed vs unreformed, but reformed have a definite edge over unreformed beyond the points difference. I like the idea for no CT penalty in extended line. No comment on the other idea...

Re: So is v2 any good?

Martin, thanks for your useful comments. I am interested in this question (how does v2 play) because I have several ancient armies that I have not played with for some time. It is not because I have switched to a rival set of ancient rules (not interested in Dbmm). I now mainly play FOGR or FOW inst...

Re: Trends in my games

Fighting Austrians here I've found just the opposite. The unreformed swarms are difficult to beat. 1. They are always in large units. What hits I do manage to score are always reduced by one. 2. My medium-ranged firepower is always reduced by Austrian horse. (And then reduced by a hit if I hit!). 3...

Bahdahbum

If it is as you say thenthe last restriction makes no sense and should be removed. That would be odd though, because there were certainly mixed divisions at Marengo.

Re: Trends in my games

We have been playing 650 to 700 points on a 6 x 4 table. This gives a good game with maneouvre and a result. We haven't found cavalry such a huge problem. They are very dicey, and can lose as easily as win. Mounted plus cannons is pretty tough, but then you should have better infantry and with the t...

Re: Emperors and Eagles questions

A question regarding the French Army of Italy, 1800. Restrictions include: Mixed divisions MUST not be used. (why bold "must"? Do you mean must NOT?) .... In mixed divisions, attachments MUST be...? Surely either the last restriction is not required, or you meant "MUST" rather th...

Re: French revolution miniatures

For 28mm revolutionary figures, Eureka miniatures (Australia or US) again do beautiful ranges of French, Austrians and now Russians too. Another option for 28mm is to look at Perry miniatures and check their AWI ranges of British and French. Purists will say the uniforms are not identical but the on...

Re: Are bow too good or am I just useless

Possibly but I am still struggling to see how for example MF arquebus are better than MF bow yet the bow are a point cheaper and that is quite a lot. Overall yes I agree bow are a little too good, or at least too cheap. However I think your example raises another point. In my view arquebus (and LF ...

Re: The Future is coming!!! FOG v2

Strategos Just to clarify my comments, those I have seen with FOW on iPads have a printed copy of the book too. I do agree a PDF would be better than an App. Still, I'd like to have FOG on a tablet, and FOG R too for that matter. As for the substance of the changes, I hope FOG A2 becomes more like F...

Re: The Future is coming!!! FOG v2

I think this is a great idea. Several of my clubs gamers have loaded PDFs of their favourite rules, notably FOW, onto iPads. It should also make it much easier to update rules and lists too. If the hobby is to survive it must attract new players, not just us veterans, and this will help.

Too bad to hear that about the 1813 French Kevin. Still, the Confedertion list is looking good for six base conscript units.

Re: Triumph of Nations Errata

Another small issue with the 1812 French infantry corps. You can get up to four skilled or competent div commanders, but only three divisional commanders overall. I take it these numbers should be reversed?

Re: Tourney Standard Points

So far we have played games with a range of points from 650 to 800. I prefer the games with 650-700 points using 28mm figures on a six by four table. It works well, forcing players to decide what to leave out.

Re: North German Confederation II Corps List....how bad???

I dont understand why people get so hung up about ratings. What matters is cost effectiveness and tactical combinations. I have won several games so far running an 1813 force of mostly conscript French. In big units they are still hard to stop. Similarly your Confederation list can buy lots of large...
