Why didn't the Greeks, while getting owned by Romans, put spearmen and or swordsmen at the front of their pike units to prevent the disruption of pikes? Put a few lines of archers behind to fire arrers over and it's an easy win. Maybe.
Roman Legionaires. Fought them, tough b*stards. In my Thracian ...

Do ambushes ever work well?
I've been reading as many AAR's as I can and I rarely see an ambush used. The idea of surprising the enemy by launching some crack troops (I'm thinking armoured, drilled, swordsmen, superior Dailami) into his/her LF is appealling, but how do I do it? If I want the terrain to ambush from, do I not ...

How are games won?
This is an intentionally vague question, because I'm not sure how to ask it.
What are the most important factors in determining which army will be successful in FoG?
Is it mobility? Terrain? Generalship? Army composition? Cheating?

pikes
Is putting pikes 5 deep when facing very good quality BG's a good idea? I can see the advantaged but it leads to a narrow frontage and easy overlaps.
Is there anything that can take on crack legionaries in the same era?
Also, it's been suggested to put Elephants on the flanks, but does this not ...

Elephants + Pikes + Impact Foot = ???
Is there any ancient army which includeds these three BG's?
The closest I can think of is Alexandrian Macedonians with Thracian MF with HW's.

After action report
Well I turned up half an hour late because I thought the club started at 6.30 so we had 3 hours to play. By decision of a coin toss I took a Greek army, can't remember specifically, and Gary took a late principate Roman army. Both armies were from the starter lists.

Request for Beta rule by Friday
I am playing my first game against another rookie FoG player tomorrow and neither of us have read the rules. He has the FoG rulebook and three other books but I have none and have no way of contacting him before tomorrow.
