Yep can be annoying when that happens.. I had a german armoured car take out a matilda of mine, I used both shots on my turn on the armoured car and missed with both, AC fires back on his turn and destroys my tank, guess its the luck of the roll

Make sure you put your side on hold fire, wait until the last possible moment then "unleash hell". I find infantry very good against tanks, as long as they can get close or manage to ambush passing tanks. I tend to find AT guns are ok for the first few turns but are usually easily over-run and wiped ...
