I tried to rebase a fresh unmoved plane to a Dirt airfield in good flying weather but it couldn't fly because the airfield didn't become highlighted when I clicked 'Rebase'. I can't remember if planes were already based there and there presumably wasn't room for another one? Or do Dirts only take sm...

There are two sliders in Options > Terrain that let us adjust the sun height and position, it's very useful for making contours and other things easier to see..

You can check it with the 'L'-shortcut, but if I remember correctly, the recon unit must cover the location from where the attack takes place. Just like when you would be attacking the enemy instead of the other way around. Maybe a bit inconsistent, as combat takes place at the hex of your own unit...
