In my limited experience I have found that a mounted reserve behind the centre of my army can get to the flank in time to make a difference. I've not tried going from one flank to the other. I think it would probably take too long. This type of movement is much slower than it can be in DBM. Cavalry...

Re: Suggestion for inclusion in rulebook

Hi all, All the purists are going to cringe and burn my effigy at the stake but here goes anyway - The rules contain 2 (semi) complete armies which are used for examples. Also I believe there is a statement to the effect - you can use card bases to start out. Correct me if I'm wrong. Now my suggest...

But why were only the Welsh who took it up as their weapon of choice? Ireland, Northern Germany, France & England all had Viking settlements at one time or another, yet there's little or no evidence that they took it up like the Welsh did. Cheers, Jer
Because it's a known fact that the W...

So, for the benefit of those who have not read the rules, is anyone able to say how the rules define 'superior' or 'elite' (to use the terms expressed in the army lists referred to in Moswin's original post) :?:

Interesting point Moswin. I think it must be very difficult for army list writers to classify a BG's training and experience of warfare particularly as, in the Early Medieval Period which is my own particularly period of interest, a very considerable number of troops may have been 'veterans' of skir...

Well I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone can make it as I, and I don't think I'm alone on this, would appreciate reading how AOW performs in comparison to other rules I am tempted to use.

I take it that's a 'No' then? It's a pity as such an event offers great opportunities to advertise the performance of the rules compared to the other rules that will be used. There is also a substantial part of a following Slingshot that is dedicated to reports on how the battle fared under the diff...

Society of Ancients Games Day...AOW?

I've been reading through this month's issue of Slingshot (Yep, I can even manage some of the big words thesedays :)) and noticed that this years SOA game will be the battle of Cynoscephalae in 197 BC. For those who may be unfamiliar with SOA games days then a chosen battle is re-fought on the same ...
In AoW mixed battle groups include either light foot archers or medium foot archers depending on the army. Roman supporting archers are light foot and only provide support if a BG is charged by enemy mounted. Medium foot archers can actually shoot and also provide support wh...

Supporting archers

Under AOW will archers whose only role will be to support close order troops (eg Late Roman infantry) be based 2 to a base, as with psiloi under DBM, or 4 to a base (perhaps 3 for irregular or undrilled)?

But do the different flavors of legionaires or hoplites co-exist within in a particular army without some other indicator to distinguish them (e.g., Spartan hoplites vs. other hoplites)? Is the decision between superior or average available to the player out of historical/gameplay flexibility? If h...

I think RBS's idea very sound indeed. If you think someone is cheating or either of you are simply getting a bit confused then check the base. I can't see a sticky label being beyond even my limited modelling skills

Unfortunately there are people who will try this sort of thing, and, as Hammy says, the umpire would only have your word for it which BGs were deployed in what order even if you could remember with any certainty. However, I think it is fairly common for the players themselves to genuinely forget wh...
