I'm a middle aged fart but for blackened armour I like to use a black basecoat, GW Boltgun Metal drybrush and then two washes of Badab Black. For russet armour Gryphonne Sepia or Ogryn Flesh washes work as well.

Thanks Chaps, I think I might mix things up a bit between having a full base of command (2 standards, officer, drummer) for my superior units and just two pikes, a standard and an officer on the bottom of the barrel units. I'm actually excited about painting again... must be spring.
