Cut from another thread.

I do always play with medium sized armies..
I was having this issue too but just stumbled across a trick by accident/luck that has worked near perfectly.

Just before you click End Turn for the AI's moves, hit Shift+3 (you know the key combo that zooms you in on the units?). When you do that just scroll back on the mouse until you like what you see. You can only zoom out so far which is nice (you won't over compensate and have to fiddle), you still get a decent overview of the field (with the limited zoom out) and you can still see the detail on the units. Then advance to the AI's turn. The camera will pan real nice like this. Once it's your turn again just hit Shift+3 and unlock it to normal. Do this a few turns and it becomes muscle memory.

I also recommend turning the game speed down to 80%. 100% works, but 80 gives you just a second or so more to take in what is happening without bogging the game down.

After discovering this, I tested it with my edited mapview camera file and the stock camera and it works great with both.

Have fun.

P.S. Can keys be remapped? It would be even better if the function could be bound to a single key.

Kinda weird. It isn't working as well now. I guess it's a "your mileage may vary" deal.

Actually, it is getting worse for me. On the AI’s turn most of the melees are off the screen. I can’t see what is happening. This seems to happen more with the Epic Battles and larger armies. Does anyone else have this problem or know some fixes?

I can zoom out to get more of the melees in my screen but the camera just isn’t moving around properly.

I play multiplayer so not sure that your fix will work!

Mord - did you change your camera settings before this issue occurred? Making the camera zoom in more?

Probably. But I have gone back and forth from an edited Mapview file and stock Mapview file.

Thanks Mord,

I tried your trick and it works well. I was also missing some of the action during the AI turn and this gives a very good perspective IMHO.
