Campaign garrisons?

I am not really sure I understand the point of this?

Do they alter the flow of the campaign events? Does the enemy ever retake a former strategic position for lack of a garrison?

Or does this option exist solely to allow you to rebalance your army composition?

Garrison is only used to change the size of your army in historical campaigns and to allow removing units from your army to rebalance it. There's no strategic role for garrisoned units.

There is actually a “strategic” use but not the garrison itself.

As the thread starter pointed out. It’s about rebalancing. When you keep your experienced troops late in the campaign, they will get more and more outnumbered. Sometimes that’s counterproductive. One would like to have enough units to prevent devastating flank charges.

Thanks. I had not considered that, and may already be on the verge of experiencing one. :)
