Diagonal Flank Breach Tactics?

New guy here
I just found a pretty weird tactics to breach the enemy flank, which works in game, but quite counter intuition in realistic situations.
When I has more cohorts on one flank, I could charge diagonally in the first turn, to change the facing of enemy cohorts.
On the next turn, the enemy flank cohort would expose it to a flank charge.
This can do fast work on flanking maneuver, especially against superior setup like pikes or other high-cost front lines. Though I wonder if this action was intended or just some kind exploit?
