SOA Later Medieval German - Question about time periods

I notice in the SOA army list for later medieval german options are split by "before 1450" and "after 1450" - however, if i look at the total bases "required" i notice requirements for troops from both periods? How do i interpret this?
My guess is - if i decide to field an army from the era before 1450, certain troops must be included such as spearmen 8-24, if i decide after 1450, pikemen must be included...
Can someone help out here?
thanks

That's my take, spear before 1450, pike after.

Thats right spears/Knights or Pikes/Knight

So... just to elaborate, if building a post 1450 army, go with pikes and ignore the spearmen requirement of 8-24 bases? And vice versa for a pre-1450 army?
Watch the quality of those knights as well based on the date, Zulu! Pre-1450 you get superior undrilled, average drilled after!

Yes, it's a definite trade-off to get pikes. Mind you, drilled knights are more likely to maneuver themselves into favorable matchups (or away from unfavorable ones).

Good points about drilled average versus superior undrilled. I have Condotta (Venice) so don't have a choice in the matter
but can see advantages to both.
Cheers,

One option worth looking at is the pre 1450 with average armoured German spear & Swiss superior pike allies. I used this list, albeit illegally when I had Hungarians with Swiss, against some Late Rep. Romans yesterday.
I found a superior legion blew through the spear block, my opponent getting 6 hits a melee grrrr, to auto break the luckless spear. But the Pike block managed to destroy an elite legion with the ally-general lending his weight to their re-rolling.
My crossbows got the better of some elephants who charged them, managing to kill one of the grey beasties, this led to the 3rd legion failing its ct, and dropping to disrupted.
At this point my superior knights having bounced of the legion earlier charged with renewed vigour and routed the legion.
Also, I found the handgunners are great when adding their firepower to other shooting, they don't need to score a hit to cause the opponent to test at -1 if you do 1per 3 in shooting.
Overall it was a great game against a great opponent, who plays the game with the right spirit and attitude.
All I need to do know is work out a legal 650 list and see how that works !
The legal parts of my list were
Swiss Pike 2 x 8 HF P S D -- Pk Pk
Spearmen 1 x 6 HF A A D -- DS Sp
Feudal MAA 2 x 4 Kn H S U -- La Sw
Crossbows 1 x 6 MF P A D Xb -- --
Archers 1 x 6 LF U A U B -- --
Swiss Xb 1 x 4 LF U A U Xb -- --
Handguns 2 x 4 LF U A U FA -- --
C-in-C TC
Sub-Gen TC
Ally-Gen TC
Not sure what I would add for the other 64 pts, maybe some more Swiss Pk, 3 blocks might be just the thing to burst through most foot lines.

3 Swiss allied pike blocks would be illegal.

One option: Mounted crossbowmen. 4 bases = 56 pts. They would have the same mission as the LH. Not sure what you do with the other 8 points, though.
Or, Armoured halberdiers. 6 bases = 60 points.
Or, Swiss halberdiers.

How so ? The Swiss ally list allows for 8-24 Pike in 8 to 12 base size after 1422.

When taking Swiss allies one of the up to three BGs must be LF Crossbowmen or Handgunners.
I wish it weren't so but maybe it's best for play balance.

Since when are allied contingents limited to 3 BG?

yeah, i am looking through the army lists.. why can you only take 3BG's? You must take a bg of LF depending on the year, handgunners or CB. As long as your main army has its min. bases.. Its fair game.

They're not - thy're only limited by the number of BGs you can get out of the allied list, and the Swiss ally can have something like 6.

That's good news.
