Reading Army Lists - Late Ottoman

Wanted to make sure I was reading this right.

In the far right, under "Total Bases" if there is a number, say, 4-12, that means you MUST take 4 bases (which is probably 1 BG), and a maximum of 12. That gives you the mandatory bases required.

I think I lost something in the translation. Looking at the Later Ottoman it says "The minima marked * apply only if the Sultan is present". Minima? Plural of minimum? Never seen that term before, so thats my best guess. Also, when would the Sultan be present? An Inspired Commander?

Also, unrelated to this army, but what does it mean when a bow is listed as "bow *" in the list?

Correct

If you state the Sultan is present you must take 1 BG of Qapu Khalqi cavalry and 1 BG of Janissaries. You can still have an IC that is not the Sultan so these troop types become optional.

Described on page 130.

Minima is indeed the plural of minimum.

Funny how we can speak the same language, yet some words are not used much (or at all) on either side... learn something new every day.

Thanks for the info. I will check that page reference, and wasnt sure about the Sultan.

just to be 100% sure : if you take one type of unit ( the cavalry ) you also have to take the other ( the jannisaries ) , vice and versa .

It is one ofthe many words copied directly from Latin.

No. If the CinC is just some Joe Shmoe from the bowles of Anatolia (inspired or not) you can take one, either or both.
