Painting Elephants

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone has any painting techniques they would be willing to share when painting elephants? I have 2 more on order. I just finished 2 a few days ago and think they look ok. What I did is paint them an overall base coat of dark grey. I then brushed on some brown all over. Then I painted on a coat of lighter grey. Finally I painted on some sand colour to give a dried on mud look heavier at the bottom then lighter near the top. I think the elephant looks ok on the table but when I take a picture of it, it looks horrible. But from 3 feet away it looks good to my eyes, my eyesight could be going too
.
Anyway, I just thought I would see what others are doing.
