Longer direct fire range effects?

I could fiddle with the equipment.pzeqp file to test this but I thought I'd ask the question first.

What happens if a tank or other unit is given, say, range 2 to its firing range?
Can it fire 2 hexes? If so, is line of sight used?
Do cities, forests, hills and mountains prevent sight and firing if they intervene?

I'm curious because I have seen some very large maps with scales that don't seem to match the scales the efile uses.

Just to confirm, test done with Tiger given range 2. It could fire at targets at 2 hexes but could fire straight through city, forest and mountain hexes. Therefore, not using direct fire - LOS/LOF is unaffected by terrain like indirect/artillery fire.
