Do troops move double in a charge, then use Variable movement dice?

Last night I charged with a unit of Gendarmes & only moved 2 MUAs!

You use the normal move distance. You only VMD if all targets evade in which case it is indeed possible to charge a short distance.

if you roll low think of it as your troops moved up the lights bugger off and they decide to not exhaust themselves making a futile charge but stop short and yell out insults at the cowards. Perhaps better judgement than running off on their own.

I agree that Variable movement is a winner.
I also think that the brigade movement is good.

However things seem slow once you get close to the enemy.

Just to reiterate, you only use the VMD if all your charge targets evade. It isn't possible to charge non-evaders who are at maximum charge reach and fail to contact them.

My experience is the opposite. I find the initial movement a little slower than Fog AM due to the shorter move distances and lower manoeuvrability, but once the lines get close things happen much quicker, largely due to less delay by skirmishers and the more deadly shooting.

I have never played FOG A/M. I was relating to other rule sets.
