Can someone point me to where the vars. mods are explained or explain them in this thread?

Check the Mods forums as a starting place, as that's where new mod's are introduced and discussed over the course of their development.

Mods I use personally:
If you play single player (SP) games, the "Rise of AI Global Mod" by roguedjack gives you a better AI to play against:

The Table Top Mod (TT Mod) has more distinctive artwork (clothing, shields, banners) and additional variations of existing army lists, but does not change the way the game plays:

Not a downloadable mod, but you can change your MAPVIEW.TXT file (make a backup!) to increase camera zoom limits and camera up/down angles:

Rise of the AI looks very interesting. I'll be giving it a shot!! I'll take the the TT mod out for a test spin. Thxs!
