An exaggeration perhaps, but Manzikert wasn't an unqualified success...
Neither was Kallinikos in Justinians time but one battle does not an era define - although it isn't an uncommon failing amongst wargamers

Manzikert wasn't an unqualified success...
Which is why the list ends there, as does the book.

Perhaps a side bet among the Byzantines would be fun.
FWIW I think it is nice that a themed comp actually has a lot of what is arguably the theme defining army.
I can remember armies and enemies of Rome themes where enemies of Rome would have been a far more accurate description.
Looking forwards to the weekend now. After all I can't possibly do worse than I did in Derby.

Hammy,
Just tell me where did you finish at Derby? I ask because THE RESULTS STILL HAVEN'T BEEN POSTED ANYWHERE
Is this a Conspiracy? Nobody knows
Did the competition actually happen?
The public have a right to know.

Have prodded BHGS webmaster. Once they are there I'll send them to the FoG webmaster - but as a BHGS comp it goes there first.

Ye gods, whatever gave you that idea

Could it have been worth mentioning on here to remind people, so I'm going to do it anyway, there are no cloths for the tables so bring your own if possible. Or it least thats what Hammy told me.

It's unlikely the BHGS would (or even could) claim IPR on the results and sue you. There's no confidentiality clause in the competition rules, is there?

Its a BHGS comp and so the results go there first - that is the BHGS view and with my BHGS hat on I am implementing it.
Nothing stopping anyone who knows the results posting them but we will only pass them officially (as the organisers) on to Pet when we have them on the BHGS site - that is our policy.

I'm adding results on an army by army basis to my FoG wiki, to show how well each army works . The bhgs listings are much better than the PDF ones on the fog site as they are easier to copy!

I would imagine they are all propping the bar up.
Anyway--See you guys at Usk in the morning. I will award brownie points for the most open eyes
If anyone is capable of using a PC tonight and need anything brought up like table covers or superglue or anything purchasable in South Wales on a Sunday then post on here before 8.30 AM Sunday.
Or maybe a Camel based Arab army------------
Or maybe a pack of Andrews liver salts and a pack of loaded dice Phil
Cheers, Terry.

34 FoG teams (one was I think just 1 player) so 67 players in total.
The Rise of Rome period was won by Lance Flint and Pete Dalby with Foederate Roman, Dave Ruddock and Martin Buxton came second with Parthians
Decline and Fall was won by Phil Powell and James Hamilton with Nikephorian Byzantine, David and Lynda Fairhurst came second with Ghaznavid
I will see what I can do about writing up my games and posting results.
Overall a very enjoyable weekend, just as enjoyable as Derby infact

Thanks to all who came. I hope you all had a very enjoyable weekend. I certainly did - 4 very enjoyable games and very few umpiring decisions required.
I will post the full results as soon as time permits.

But also nice that they didn't do better, otherwise we would have had a four page thread about the new unbeatable super army.

I take it from all the postings, that anyone who is not using a Byzantine army is out of the race
Perhaps we should let them form their own break away competition
Or just leave them in with everyone else as 'good sport'
That will be us losing to four of them heavily then
It didn't turn out that way. 4 different Nikes, played differently, producing different results. So it wasn't a super army.
The varangians were utterly hard as nails tho.
