On the May-blooming hills of Hanover, the gribol and markleslie armies met. After a few cannon salvos (which turned out to be cheering shots) and the antics of a few drunken hussars with a lot of imagination, ... both armies dismounted and started to barbecue on this beautiful, sunny weekend. They brought out sausages (that means us sausages, and the Bavarians that white stuff), beer (that means us beer, and the Bavarians that watery pour) mustard, bread and pickles (I'm not commenting on what the Bavarians brought out this time ...). Everyone started the festival with La Grande bouffe, drank like a Bela, and went home after the wekkend because they didn't have the energy for anything else.

And the battle thus ended in a draw.

A messenger arrived today at the Habsburg court bringing good news about the war!

The Austrian army, blocked in its way to Munich by a Bavarian host strongly arrayed on some hills in the countryside, slowly gained the upper hand by engaging the enemy on the two flanks and exchanging deadly salvoes from a distance in the center, where the altitude discouraged any frontal assault.

Particularly, on the Austrian right flank, where the plain didn’t rise a lot, it was possible to gain some numerical superiority and press home the advantage with the help of the cavalry that found a little space to launch his charge.
At the end of the day the casualties were 26% for the Austrians and 49% for the Bavarians, that were forced to abandon the field and seek refuge in some wisely built fortifications which prevented the full exploitation of the victory.

No fortune favours the tricky Hannoverian who intersperses his musketeers with selected cavalry units, rather than massing the cavalry on the wings like a true Gentleman.
However right (and an extra 200 points) will prevail over this sheer effrontery

Despite a heroic defence against overwhelming enemy forces, and a lack of luck, the Anglo-Hanoverians suffered a 56:42 defeat and retreated to preemptively fortified positions.

Gribol proved a most worthy opponent, until the final rounds the results were very very even, then his army collapsed.

Our Strategic victory has become a tactical victory due to his hastily erected fortifications, So only half of the citizens of Gelderland have obtained the freedoms, and superior cheeses, of being part of Denmark.

I don't think it works that way, Sire.
My subjects seem to like me [and my taxes] a lot.

Indeed the rules states that when the the winner’s routed units are between 1% and 15% fewer than the loser’s there's a marginal victory.

So that, in this case, the difference of routed units being limited to 14% (56% - 42%), awesum4 has won a marginal victory, that doesn't entail the conquest of the province, but the other benefit provided for this event.

Within tomorrow I'll update the campaign summary, in order to start the third turn!

So possibly asking for the future, shouldn't fortifications turn Marginal Victory into a draw?
Admittedly the rules currently state otherwise, but in future perhaps it would be clearer?

The rationale behind the rule is that the presence of fortifications allows a defeated army the possibility of not abandoning the country to the enemy, maintining some control of it.

So, given that a marginal victory, istead of a tactical or strategical one, doesn't allow the winning army to march into the defeated army province in order to take it, but just to make some plunder, there is no choice fortifications can be of any help in decreasing the other effects of the defeat.

Moreover, reviewing the effect of the rules as evidenced by the ongoing game, I'm beginning to think that fortifications are probably overpowered and, in the future, I'm planning to make them destroyed after being used so that, if someone wants to renew their effect, he has to pay again for it.

And the same is to be said for major assault, which seems to give the attacker an exaggerated benefit over the enemy, so that in the future they could be limited to a +10% differential advantage in army points, while decreasing their cost.

Unfortunately, after the second turn, France was decisevely defeated and had to sue for peace, been ousted from the war.

Thanks to Ironclad, whose honour wasn't paired by luck!

The order for the 3rd turn is now the following:

DENMARK, AUSTRIA, BAVARIA, ANGLO-HANOVERIAN

I'd surely prefer to go with the new version, that's much more complete!

Before I post my move I'd like to ask what the changes are in the new version if that is what we are playing.

Also from next Monday I will be away for six weeks on holiday in Cambodia and Thailand, and won't be taking my laptop. So I would ask that Ironclad be employed as a mercenary commander to fight my round 3 battles.
