I think RBS explained at some point that there are no cohesion checks for blocked push-backs because in some wargames such mechanic was exploited by preventing the enemy units from falling back by light units. The system I suggest would also apply to and work logically with normal melee push backs, not just the break-off blocking exploit specifically.

It is a difficult subject because there are some historical examples where excessively deep formations have been used to prevent infantry from being pushed back (e.g. Hoplite warfare) but also examples where too deep and packed formation has resulted in units losing their fighting ability (e.g. Watling Street).

My idea for the cohesion tests was to apply it purely to lights, with the logic that

1) Lights don't have the 'mass' to prevent the movement of non light troops
2) Using non lights for extra pinning purposes, while still slightly gamey, takes considerably more maneuver time, and, generally, higher point value units to accomplish.
