kevinj wrote:To be honest there's such a variety of armies that there isn't much scope for historical matchups, it would end up something like:
Poles v Hungarians (not sure if they ever fought but they're the same date and not too far apart)
Swiss v Venetian (probably reasonable)
Japanese v Indonesian (starting to stretch the credibility a bit now)
Flanders Carolines v Danish (recreating the infamous Cheese and Bacon war)
Adal v Mughal (For the title of best army ending in "AL")
2 Austrians v Irish and Spanish (No idea what that would be)
Which leaves the 2 Scottish armies to fight amonst themselves, which is their default option in the absence of other opponents

Getting all excited now with only a week to go...
I'd be inclined to put the Austrians up against the Poles/Hungarians and have the Irish and Spanish play each other or face off against the Scotch.
Given that would mean a 50:50 chance of facing Alasdair in the first round I'm more than happy with a random draw...

Just to throw a spanner in the works there is a good chance I won't be able to attend due to the person providing my transport and lodging for the weekend having to pull out.
Bugger. Bugger.

TIMETABLE?
Strangely, I can't find a timetable on the BHGS site.
I'm assuming 08:30 for 09:00 on Saturday and 09:00 on Sunday.

Dear All,

Better still, lend them to the other Austrian Imperialists - 16 Hvy Art!

Well, at l3east I managed to make a significant contribution to the final standings, providing a significant number of points to both the winner and the third placed player.
Next time can I have a draw that avoids me playing at least one of the current top 3 ranked players in the UK though....

To be fair Tim you out manoeuvred me, out shot me
and then can't blamed if your troops decided not to fight, lots of 1, 2's and 3's
that said you reminded me how scarey Gendarmes are when they are coming at you
Thanks for the game
and to be fair you are possibly the only person who has defeated the swiss by breaking all the keils rather than their odds and sod
Thanks for a great weekend
Cheers
Alasdair

Thanks to all for a good weekend, especially Kevin for umpiring and list checking.
My Scots had a really torrid time. My Scots artillery totally replicated the shockingly bad performance of their historical ancestors at Flodden and in a whole weekend, 4 heavy guns killed only 5 enemy bases and didn't contribute to a single enemy BG routing! Day 1 consisted of the Keils being flayed by Charles Masefield's artillery whilst crawling across the table chasing light foot 3" at a time. My ability to roll failing death rolls meant I lost 2 keils to artillery fire alone!!
A great afternoon game aganst Tim P see-sawed all the way again until my artillery missed Tim's last ditch cavalry ride around my keils when I only needed to take off one base to stop it, failed and saw the cavalry ride into the rear of one of my Keils which had fragged it's opposing keil. However this cowardly rear attack, saw my Keil dropped to disrupted on contact, fragged in impact combat and Rout in melee combat and then take a second Keil with it and hence the game. Tim's 2 base artillery killed more of my Keil bases in this game than I killed all weekend!!
Such an appalling performance earned me a lie in on Sunday morning (being bottom meant I got a bye!) before a Sunday afternoon Scottish civil war against Stephen Stead. A street brawl down Sauchiehall Street after an alcohol fuelled Saturday night, this was not. 8 Scottish guns facing 4 Scottish guns meant the Keils hid out of range or behind hills whilst the highlanders went thistle collecting in the woods. The only casualty was one Keil base and that was from the French ally. This game proved that the Scots are a peace loving crowd who wouldn't dream of inflicting any pain on another Scotsman no matter the provocation!!!
Time to retire the Scots and get in some practice for Britcon (that's a novel concept!)

I think Dave Allen also may admit to having had a similar experience, but against him my troops generally all broke and ran before they got anywhere near combat.. I'm pretty sure at one point around an hour into that game I was within 1-2 VP's of an army rout, and I had lost more units than I had lost bases...

I only broke two Superior and one Elite - not all 4 !

Although i ended up with a bye on the Sunday afternoon, which allowed me to breakdown at a more social able time on the way home

. I did have three very enjoyable games. Even against mr Briggs and his damm Swiss

I claim morale victory of taking his baggage camp.... Did he care... Buffalo he did

having faced Swiss keils.... Yes they are that scary...
Thanks to alasdair for lending me such a random army.... Enjoyable to play... Not sure when the Swiss slammed into my line they either stumbled or tripped... Or neither
See those that are going at to attack and britcon... You'll have the pleasure of me being probelerly out pointed by byron...

Since Graham's army only had 11 BG equivalents getting all 4 would have been tough, you'd have to get the last 2 in the same phase!

Tim's planning to do it in the the next day or so.

I'm not admitting anything until I've spoken with my lawyers!
Honestly, I've rarely ever seen such a spectacular cascading dice collapse. From losing two Art, six Heavy Armoured Carabiniers, three bg's of four LF and having a Keil fragmented you managed to hold on for a good spell. The fact that all this damage came from an attack by four LF and four LH shows why Central London players shouldn't be allowed to play each other in competitions - incompetence allied to outrageous dice is a lethal combination.
My two games against Central London players (Tim and Brian [bye] Holmes) netted me three quarters of the 61 pts that gave me a very jammy second place. The rest came from a hard fought draw with RBS and a mismatch against Greg Mann's Hungarians.
My thanks to the BHGS gang for making the whole thing possible, and to my opponents for three very enjoyable games.

He could have done it though. The Kiel that survived had been charged twice by gendarmes and had lost a few bases while doing no damage to the horsemen.
We lost a superior Kiel fighting an Average pike and shot Kiel. And the elite Kiel made no impression on another of the same; not even a base off. However that was not as ignominious as the superior keil that lost frontally to 6 average, heavily armoured carbine/sword horse.
A game of several minor mistakes on my part; perhaps if I'd played better I'd have got a different result.
Amusingly, part of the problem was that the keils, while quite close together, were fighting the enemy unit on unit. So we couldn't overwhelm any one unit. So in my next game, against Richard's early Spanish I decided i wouldn't repeat that mistake and aimed two keils at each of his infantry GBGs (break them and hit camp and artillery and army goes). That turned out to be an error too....

Dave - I think you are over egging it. It was only 3 bases of LH which did all the the damage, not 4.
If the LH unit had still been at full strength of 4, I might well have recorded a negative score in that round....

Thank you to all the competitors (and umpires, list checkers and table-shifters!) who helped make Roll Call 2013 such a great success - over 150 players including a record attendance in Warhammer Fantasy Battles meant a good time was had by all in Cranfield over the weekend of 22/23 July.
Here you will find all of the results we have for the event so far.
