Guys - why not just agree to disagree?
I've never seen this occur in a game and I'm astonished that this thread is still going. Or maybe it's just a quiet time and you've got nothing else to do?

Well, nothing more fun than this.

......Step away and move on (Dave and Gregory). You are never going to agree, and without author support this is not going to be adequately solved to either persons satifaction!

Nonsense. Dave told me to play the rule as written. So I will. Since it is unlikely that we shall ever meet, I shouldn't care how Dave interprets the rule as written. But I know how I do.

Personal note to gozerius: We will never play it that a base can turn 180 to face a flank charge unless and until there is an official ruling that it is correct to do so. I personally think you have read the rules as a whole correctly, others don't agree. I can't help that.

It would help if the authors had made a better definition of a rear charge. As Graham pointed out, a BG that is entirely directly behind its target, but hits a rear corner first is by definition a flank charge. That does cause pause.
But the alternative, that any time a BG is hit by a flank charge and can't turn 90 due to obstructions it must turn 180 is also going too far. If it wasn't for that word "immediately" I'd accept the conventional wisdom that all turning happens after all charges are complete, but I will not be bullied into accepting that bases no longer able to turn 90 to face have to turn 180. That's just not supported by the diagram.
