flatsix518 (Swedish 1630-34) won vs AEMIL (Catholic League 1619-32)

AEMIL engaged in a long turning movement that took a long while to develop. I was able to operate on interior lines and had him pretty well shot up before much combat occurred. AEMIL pulled back for the final battle, but the Swedish Salvo foot were too much.

flatsix518 (Catholic League 1619-32) won vs AEMIL (Swedish 1630-34)

AEMIL came on aggressively with the Swedes. A very large cavalry fight developed on one flank that the Catholics won. The Tercios gave good account of themselves and the Catholic cavalry pushed the battle over the top.

Thanks for the games, AEMIL -- good luck in the rest of the tournament.

Aryaman (Spanish 1494) won 18% vs Iosef 60% (French 1494)

Tougher than the final result suggests, good fight.

I guess that's supposed to be addressed by allowing each player to pick a match-up of countries of their choice.

However, RBS soundly drubbed me in a game in which I was Poland and he was the Ottomans, so no match-up is a sure thing.

If you recall, Hrothgar, both of us loss on our picks! (Which you pointed out at the time.)

Best,

John

That's true, but I expect it's not common. In my other first round matches, I won the one I picked, and, altho it's close, I expect to lose the one my opponent picked.

It still seems like the choice of sides should have some balancing effect. However, as I noted above, no particular choice guarantees winning.

Dortmund (french 1643-1648) won vs AEMIL (spanish 1635-1648). 17% vs 42% routed.

A strange and quick battle in a flat land that I thought I would lose. A lot of my infantry units failed a lot of fall back tests and became disrupted and fragmented when the spanish tercios were 2 tiles close... but the cavalry saved my day doing an excellent and fast job in one flank. The difference in the result is too big compared with the reality of the battle. If we had played a few more turns, I'm sure I would have been defeated.

Thanks Mr. AEMIL for this battle.

TheGrayMouser and I split our pair.

flatsix (Swedish 1630-34) won vs TheGrayMouser (Catholic League 1619-32)

My army was very favored by the terrain. I had some hills and the obvious main avenue of attack looked like a gutter on a bowling lane. The mouse did what he could with the hand dealt him. He threw a hard right hook and a left jab and was careful with his foot in the middle. In the end, it looked like his tercios were going to come good for him, but somehow, someway, the Swedes found a way to win. (43 vs 64)

TheGrayMouser (Weimarian 1635-43) won vs (flatsix (German Catholic 1639-48)

I really thought I had this game at deployment. There was a large hill opposite my right flank. I thought it would decide the battle, so I loaded my right to attack and take the hill. The mouse fought and clawed his way into this one and managed to gain a lot of flank attacks against my forces who won the initial melees. He made it close, and then he won it -- dammit. (54 vs 63)

Round 2 result:

rbodleyscott (Royalist 1645-1648) won vs ggarynorman (New Model Army 1645) (14% to 50%)

A strong advance by pikeless musketeers and dragoons into enclosed fields on the Royalist left allowed the Royalists to drive off the first wave of Parliamentarian cavalry, cavaliers coming up to deal with the second wave. Cavaliers in the centre rode down a Parliamentarian pikeless musketeer unit and rolled up a heap of flanked units in the pursuit. On the Royalist right, one pikeless musketeer unit that emerged from enclosed fields was ridden down by Parliamentarian horse, but the adjacent battalions, having 15% pikes, were able to repulse all cavalry charges on them long enough for the other Parliamentarian wing and centre to collapse.
