I didn't put anything in the tournament rules about this. Usually, as you know, it's the first two
rounds, not sure how this convention arose. Certainly as there isn't a preponderate number of players
from one country, except perhaps Italy, a national meeting is much less likely. And I'm sure the Italian
players would rather be playing non-Italians.

I don't regard your request as unreasonable. Does anyone else attending have a view on this?

Regards,
Peter
(Umpire)
D'oh, forgot about the large number of Italians. Would probably be best for no same club for natives and no same country for foriegners until saturday morning. Then we will all get to play at least 2 new people. Though the Brits will play at least 4 of different nation no matter how you do it. :)

And there was me thinking that like the boy Porter you thought all the good players were going to the worlds so you'd sneak off and try and bag a cup
Bag a cup? In Italy? No Chance...

I think I'd need to organise my own competition to stand any chance of that....

It seems that Mr Charlton still has not registered his interest. Perhaps he was drunk when you spoke to him Phil? Or had a "bad head" or something...

Anyway - how do you get from Fiumicino airport to Rome? I am staying "a stone's throw" from Castel Saint Angelo (which given experience from Pisa can mean anything upto two miles...) any help would be greatly appreciated - do I have to get the bus?

On the web site:

Basically there's an express train every 30 minutes, non stop to Termini station; trenitalia's web site tells me
it runs at 06 and 36 minutes past each hour. It's 11 euro each way. There is also local trains that are half
the price, but they stop everywhere, it takes an hour, and you have to change. Don't, would be my advice :)
ALWAYS stamp your ticket before you get on the train (look for a yellow box about waist height at station
and platform entrances).

Then you want Metro line A from Termini, direction to "Battistini". Should be about 1 euro. On this map
you can see the line at the top going Spagna->Flaminio->Lepanto->Ottaviano. Pick which ever is
closest to your hotel.

The venue is that pentangle shape to the right of the Vatican.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi from the airport to the hotel. It's a fixed price of 40 euro from the
airport to anywhere inside the central area for up to 4 people including bags, so would be worth it
if there's a group of you. The central area includes around the Castle. Make sure your taxi driver
agrees this before! Always use the white licensed taxis (ignore anyone who comes up and offers
transport).

Watch your wallet on the metro and especially around Termini station... otherwise Roma is a fairly
safe city, unless you're a football fan.

PS Roma in July should be hot - unless the weather does something funny, I would guess
low to mid 20s in the morning, somewhere about 30°C in the afternoon - so bring light, loose
clothes, shorts and sandals even. However, Roma is not usually as humid as Milano say, and
the venue is in gardens so it should be slightly fresher.

Is the venue air conditioned ;)

Seriously - are we under awnings or something? I presume they will be roped off to prevent the general public from getting to close to wargamers?*

Those of us who are afflicted will be able to smoke at the table. Something I haven't seen in about 10 years!!!

* It can seriously damage your health

Under cover, I believe. Not sure what the arrangements are for keeping back the crowds of
your adoring public are. Will you be providing your own security detail, or do we need to
arrange it? :D
