The BG shifts no more than a half base width and the file on the end in which the direction of the shift is drops behind. Example: A BG of 4 Cav in line evades through a 3 base wide gap. at the start of the evade both ends of the BG have an obstruction behind them. The BG turns 180, then three bases shift a half base width left as the lefthand base drops behind the base on its right. Shifting and dropping back are simultaneous, so you don't count the dropped back base as shifting a half base width and then dropping back as another full base width. This may create an irregular formation until the next reform sorts it out.

OR, by saying "any one base" do you mean the LH can either shift 40mm OR move one pair behind the other, but not both.

No I don't think you are right. I think Graham is saying that no base may move more than 40mm whether by contraction or shifting sideways. Some bases may shift; some may contract. But none can move more than 40mm.
This is what I am saying

bahdahbum wrote:If you contract some bases, how can they shift and not move more than 40mm ( if playing with 5mm figures ) . It's impossible to do both but the rules say you may shift AND contract ...so how do you do it if the solution presented here is not correct.

Unless you consider contracting as not moving sideway 40mm
Contract in one direction, shift in the other direction.

You are right, you can't. It isn't possible. But it doesn't matter. The rules are very restrictive on evading. The rules are written to give you the choice of how you want to shift/contract to get away from the enemy as long as no one base contracts/shifts more than 40 mm.

So it is either one :- a shift up to 1 base width, or a 1 base/file contraction, which must be 1 base width.

OR

Both:- shift up to 1 base width and a contraction of 1 base width/file(LH, LF)

Come on authors, stick your necks out. :)

Cheers
Rob

NO it can be both so long as no bases moves more than 1 base width sideways.

Ok, let's say you have a single line of 4 Cav bases that wish to evade through a gap. I guess you could shift the right base to the left and contract the 2 left most bases ending in a 2x2 block. But you could just as easily contract the bases on either end and get the same result. Doesn't really matter.

Yeas, that is correct. So if you have:

ABCD

You can end up:

CD
AB

C and D have shifted one base width to the left. A and B have shifted one base width to the right, and have formed a second rank

Blimey! I thought titanu's diagram nailed this one on the head long ago...

Mik thanks we try to make it easy for the weaker brethren - as they say 'every picture tells a storey' - what a great album that was :D

Yeah, but discussing FOG rules is fun and we don't have enough questions coming in.

Certainly not FoGAM. The Apple upgrade to IoS7 has stuffed the e-version of the rules. Slitherine responses have been vague about when any remedy might be available so you may prefer to stick with paper for now.

There are some very good implementations of board/card games which work very nicely with the ipad interface. PM me if you want more information.

Ha! I used that joke at home...my wife managed to scratch her eyeball and we had to improvise a patch for a couple of days.
