I should confess that I simply quit when I realised all my pikes were average, and assumed the scenario was unbalanced.

Well as you know, I'm no Pyrrhus (except in that my men always suffer horrendous casualties...) but I've played it twice as the Carthaginians and be soundly beaten once and squeaked the narrowest of wins the second time. While the Sacred Band are superior, the other Carthaginian 'troops' (I use the term in its loosest possible sense) are all average, and by 'average', they mean 'crap'. The Gauls in particular are a massive rout waiting to happen.

Grumblefish - Paisley has it quite right.

I was the one he narrowly beat - it was of course the fact I was laughing so much at how quickly the Gauls (most suitable emoticon =) ran off that I was somewhat distracted.

I think the scenario is well balanced and has the added benefit of being large enough to allow a player to snatch victory from what may look like an awfully bad position - the potential to be a real roller coaster.

You might criticise the distance apart at which the forces start (which gives you time to get to know your opponents grandchildren even if he doesn't have any yet) but IMHO and on reflection it gives the latitude to try out several different approaches to the different problems each side faces. I for one will be playing this one again.

Scenario

I am glad that you have enjoyed the Scenario. The description of the battle is from a historical perspective and refers to his battle hardened troops, not to the game systems status of Elite or Superior (Apolgize if this causes confusion). Even though Pyrrus is heavily outnumbered, the points are actually very close. Pyrrus actually has a ten point advantage on the Carthaginians with a 655pt army vs a 645pt army. The armies were designed based on three sets of sources - historical accounts of the battle, a already created scenerio for the batttle (for a different game system), and the army lists in the Field of Glory books - Rise of Rome & Immortal Fire. All unit stats were taken from these books. All of his Phalanx's in the book (Rise of Rome) are listed as Average, unless they are Tarantines in which case they are rated as Poor. Every unit of Phalanx in this battle are non-Tarantine and therefore are all rated as Average. Thanks, I hope you continue to enjoy playing the battle. :D
