Yes but would get 3 shooting dice to the light horse 2 and would also have the potential to charge the light horse.

But would never catch the LH, unless foolishly within 1 MU. And the 4 LH don't lose dice for disruption and can move away easily when disrupted.

I disagree that these are particularly good value. They are so vulnerable to any foot that they could be a liability.
Thats why they have to be drilled.

And by being protected can afford to absorb a couple of bow shot from someone else who has to take the brunt of it and they dont fear light horse or LF in difficult as much.

Chasing the LH away with a charge even a couple of times might delay it enough to keep the camp safe. Also against a lone LH the MF could go 4 wide without any real issues and get 4 dice worth of shooting.

If the LH are disrupted and run away, so much the better as you have protected the camp.

4 protected MF are only marginally better than the average LH BG. They might keep your camp safe for an extra turn or two in that role I suppose.
It depends on what they are doing. In a shooting competition to protect your camp I believe they are far worse than LH that is threatening it.
The MF find it much more difficult to get out of the way if disrupted, so less chance to rally. They take a -1 for edge if the world if they take a CT. But then most peoples LH cost more than 4 XBow.
Phil - as you of all people should know, it depends upon how far from the edge your camp is! If the camp is <12MU from the flank and maximum, in the -1 does not apply from all angles. Obviously does not apply if you are camp and right on the edge, so to speak.
