I wouldn't have thought there was anything wrong with the later empire having more auxilia than legio. Weren't the Legio citizens and the auxilia those trying to become citizens or those with a lesser claim to being Romans a la Brian Maximus/Cohen.

I guess so. But whether they would have put into the field an army which had most of the empires best support troops assigned to an auxiliary heavy task force with a small amount of very average legionaries....?

Hi Peter and Andrea, just like to say thank you for a great and relaxing comp in Rome. The games were fun and relaxing, even playing people with little or no English. Guess beer and rolling sixes is a universal language now.

I had a lot of fun for my first comp having moved to the UK and look forward to coming to more of them. Now the Oath of Fealty has been released, I can start building my Communal Italian or Feudal Germans.

I'll be back in Rome next year.

I was talking about the army you used which appeared to me completely fine, some Super legio, slightly more auxilia than legio and some missile support troops/cav.

Its a Roman army of the late Empire period. It has to have some intrinsic degree of moral degeneracy, surely?

Well, if we are going to do a top 10 then here we go

1. Never listen to the sales blurb... Don't worry - if it rains we have awnings to cover us. Awnings my a**e.

2. Don't think that if you own a hat then you will look like a berk on the plane heading towards Rome, so don't take it. See the comment about Hat Cartels...

3. When Phil Powell calls you an alcoholic you know you have been drinking too much.

4. Don't trust Tim Porter. Especially when he moans for 4 hours about not being able to catch light horse.

5. In July it is hot in Italy. Don't expect the organisers to provide any cover. Although they are "Johnny on the spot" with sun cream.

6. When you spend 30 Euros on a meal and get 15 Euros of booze, expect everybody to whinge madly when the meal is, erm, not very good - i.e. what do you expect for 15 Euros? On the good side, this means you get at least two portions of everything

7. Apparently "Italy time" only works on Friday and Saturday. When Italians need to go early (i.e. to get home on Sunday) they can be surprisingly punctual.

8. Beer is exceptionally expensive - 5 Euros a pop... However, it does change price depending upon what time you buy it. At 4pm it is only 3.5 Euros a go.

9. German airports are murder to get through with toy soldiers. Don't ever try it.

10. Never trust Tim Porter.

11. I am not going to have an eleventh point in a top 10...

Funnily enough the very same thought crossed my mind! I'll let you know when I next get an overnighter - but I reckon your army would be a very tough nut to crack - Pedro did very well to beat you!

The second game you played against the Ottomans seemed a little strange in that your opponent wasted his best troops - his Janissaries.

Looked like a good close fought tournament - well done again!
