Div 1
General Shapur (Armenian) defeats Aetius39 (Lydian) 61:49
A very vicious battle with near collapse of both armies with 2 mid game cascade morale checks. Things seemed to be in the balance all thru. Thankfully a few lat game rallies helped me too.

Thanks for the write up. Very interesting seeing my moves from your point of view. My strategy here was to load up the left flank with cav on a gamble that you would assume it was going on the right flank and set up accordingly, leaving me a gap to get behind your army. Failing that, the plan was to line up my light cav to force you to charge and break up your line - allowing me some flank charges and to get behind you. This i did - but Romans just dont chase as often as other armies
Other than you outplaying me as a given. The game went downhill for me 1. because you didn't leave the gap i needed on your right at setup, 2. because that cav wouldn't break, 3, the river only gave me one flank to work on.
I knew none of my cav would be able to damage even your crap units on a head on charge, so this was really the only choice left.
How did you tally up the points of my army that was visible so quickly - seemed like you had an app for it - lol
Still, an interesting game and thanks for the write up.
The combo of the terrain and armies did indeed make it difficult for you - I think that 200POA for Darts/Light Spear actually came in useful for once, in this matchup. As to the points tallying, I paused the recording and got out the calculator on my phone. It's not something I'm really proud of doing, but I suffered a number of defeats in the League due to being too lazy to count points, so now I just do it when I feel it necessary.

OK folks, here's the first scoring update for season 4. Div 2 and 3 have completed a fair number of games so far; Div 1 is lagging a bit it seems.

Thanks, Captain, for your kind words in the chat and for the battle: I found it a great battle too, highly volatile and uncertain up until the very end.

The loss of the CImmerian CnC ( Conan perhaps??) and cascade of cohesion blows speeded things up quite rapidly.

Div 2
Kerait (Byzantine 988-1041) beats kronenblatt (Western Hunnic 376) 47-66.
I think it was probably just kronenblatt's superior skill that staved off a quicker and more complete defeat against the Byzantines here. The Romans of this period seem to have a force exceptionally well-suited to fighting horse archers and the difficult terrain stacked the odds against the Huns even higher.

rbodleyscott (Triballoi Thracians 770-350 BC) defeated Kerait (Indo-Parthians) 55:18
The Triballoi Thracian army proved to be surprisingly effective with massed Thracian MF spearmen, supported by lots of light foot and a few cavalry and light horse.

Division 1
Aetius39 (Romans 105BC) defeats Karvon (Alans 25 AD) 51-24
There was forest, rough ground, and some hills, making it not very ideal for the all-cavalry Alans. Still, they made it really tough to finish them off, the Romans had to keep holding their men back and not venturing too far from the rest. A few got picked off like that, but ultimately the Romans were able to isolate/finish off enough of the Alan cavalry to get the win. GG Karvon and thanks for playing, it was fun.^^

32 Wakavengerf @ Arab (Syria/Iraq) 890-1008 AD vs roguedjack @ Thracian (Gallic) 280-212 BC
roguedjack defeated Wakavengerf 53:26
Expecting to face a lot of lancers I deployed defensively on a hill flanked by builtup areas. The Arabs cavalry wings were scary, especially the massive amount of lancers on the left. I made some adjustments to my deployment to reinforce the wings and create more favorable infantry pairings in the center. When both enemy wings were commited and the risk of my centre advancing and being outflanked reduced, I could gradually push my center right infantry downhill where I had mostly favorable odds.
At the end for several turns the score difference was agonisingly hovering at +23%/+24% before finally reaching the threshold on turn 17.
Good game, initially I was pretty sure I was going to get crushed on my left, slowly grinded on my right and outflanked to death but thankfully it didn't happen.

Division 2
Captain Savage (Khorasanian) defeated Kerait (Carthaginian - Hannibal in Africa) 51:19
The battle was dominated by a huge hill on my left flank that in the end we both avoided. We both put medium troops on that flank and I charged down from the hill and we fought on the plain in front of it. My massed archers and Dailami destroyed the enemy right flank and I ran away from the veteran spears in the centre for as long as possible. An elephant charge by my right flank shattered the Carthaginian cavalry.
It felt like three separate battles. Elephants charging lancers are amazing. They died on spear tips at the end but the damage was done.
Great game.

Deeter (Roman 313-338 AD) vs. Blagrot (Carthage 340-281 BC) 33 - 56
The battle was going in Blagrot's direction when, at the last moment, a stunning charge by some Roman lancers routed a series of enemy units, putting Rome over the top. Well played.

Division 3
Blagrot (Pontic 281-11 BC) beat Wmpryor (Lombard 568-569 AD) 56% - 28%
The lombard cavalry steadily cut through the lighter Pontic horse on the right but got trapped long enough on the left to be flanked by angry Thracians with oversized swords, meanwhile the pikes wrecked every warband they touched in the centre and the medium foot mostly held out long enough to be saved by the pikes. Thanks for the game.

Div 2
Kerait (Kyrenean Greek 460-322BC) defeats Rob123 (Sassanid Persian 350-476AD) 32-57.
The Sassanids deployed a well-rounded army of infantry, cavalry and elephants while the Kyreneans opted for a single massive block of hoplites with some supplementary forces on the flanks. On the Sassanid right wing, the Persian cavalry did make short work of the scant screen of skirmishers and horse seeking to shield the hoplite advance from the right and threatened to swing around the Kyrenean rear. However, on the Kyrenean right wing, chariots (with some luck) overcame the Persian horse, and most importantly, on a central hill, where the main fighting concentrated, the hoplite human wave proved unstoppable, though at least the elephants went down with some struggle. With that defining contest won, the Kyreneans could see off any final threat posed by the surviving Sassanid cavalry on their right.
Thanks for this fun and interesting game.

Division 2
Captain Savage ( Seleucid) defeated bomber23 (Norman) 54:10
A notable game for the sudden appearance of the Giant crossbowmen on the Norman right flank (update glitch that was very entertaining).
The Normans brought all the cavalry on their left and the armoured spears on the right. I did not think I could match his lancers troop for troop so I brought two elephant units and pikes in the centre. Cataphracts in reserve with cheap troop on the left for hiding in wood and low hills on my left. Annoyed by the skirmishers I threw at the lancers he charged to drive them off and then the elephants counter charged. Supported by some medium spears they managed to disrupt and break enough lancers to drive them back. The Norman elite foot lancers were very tough but got flanked by the pikes before they could destroy my left flank. A more open battlefield would probably have seen me flanked by the copious lancers. Terrain was my ally in this one with enough woods and rough terrain to keep my mediums safe against the Norman heavy troops.
I was very impressed by the options available to the Seleucids.
Fun Game. Thanks to bomber23.
