I am one of the few that prefer not to 'Over-Strengthen' units... nor to do other such like-wise 'Gimmickry'... "its just not my style!". I've had little problem with not having to strengthen my units... and I will continue to not do so!.

Over-strength is one way to increase the "punch" you're delivering by a single unit.
If you use 2 units, they will occupy 2 hexes, and in many cases you can only attack an enemy unit from a certain hex. Moreover, two weaker units can only attack one at a time, and the enemy also retaliates twice, defensive units fire twice, and so on.
In an edge case, an overstrength unit can kill or suppress the enemy fully before that could retaliate - if it has higher initiative. This way you can get away from an engagement without suffering any losses (without having a huge difference in attack and defense strength between the two).
This is the most spectacular with strong tank units: a 15-strength Panther unit with 4-5 stars can destroy a 10-strength T-34 with shorter barrel in one hit, giving it an overrun, so it can move to the next tank unit and stomp that too... RAMPAGE!

Add some heroes to the picture, and you get really munchkin units, usually tanks because of the overrun ability, strong armor, high speed, high base attack.
So, it may worth the extra slots in many cases. But not all cases.

Overstrength Prototypes, as they cannot be repaired during the course of a scenario. An overstrengthed unit is harder to destroy. Also, Prototypes are often only available in limited numbers so, since you can't by many of them, buy one strong unit.
Sometimes, a unit can be overstrengthed a little without increasing the number of Core Slots required. If you have loads of Prestige, it makes sense.
Fighters can be worth overstrengthening, as with a very strong unit, you can entirely kill another in one attack.
Also, it might be worth overstrengthening if you are likely to Split the Unit during the course of the scenario.

I played in every run with the trait no overstrength and the positiv traits panzer & infantry general.
In my current run I picked bad logistic also.
In this combination the games works, but sometimes I have the feeling to have not enough units to deploy.
But I won the game twice on General with all paths.
It*s pure fun, don't miss to try it out.

Try it without heroes. I think heroes ruin realism much more than over-strength.
I did a playthrough with no replacements (except for deployment turn and on supply hexes), and trench slug (entrenchment decrease is half for you - rounded down, so "normal" attacks don't erode entrenchment!) - now that would have been impossible without heroes. But it also ruins the fun that you have to do everything with 1-2-3 units, the rest are just useless...

I really enjoy playing without overstrength. I like slow methodical play and I can say that none of the missions was too short for such a playstyle. Here is the list of my traits and also my army composition in the last scenario.

The AI uses overstrength doesn't he, so why shouldn't we use it too in order to make it a level playing field, or am I missing something?

If you want this arcade game to be more of a simulation than a game, play without overstrength or heroes as they simply are a way for players to bulldoze their way to victory without resort to skill or tactics. If you must play with heroes limit them to one per unit if you want a challenge.

I play mostly in the Random generator anyway and there are no heroes in there, I don't need 'em anyway..

But regarding overstrength units, the AI throws them at me so I throw them at him and say to him-
