Archers get dice from the front rank in impact, and also the back rank. Can't rightly remember the numbers, but they effectively get to shoot, yes, but it's incorporated into the impact combat.

1 die per base from the rear rank for MF archers.

Front rank of archers use their Impact POAs (usually none).
Rear rank uses shooting POAs, which include a negative for shooting in the Impact Phase.
But it is 50% more dice thrown in the Impact combat.

So skirmish archers don't return fire in the impact phase?
Only when archers are attached to heavy foot in rear rank they are involved?

Actually, that's a good point. I've never considered it, but I imagine they do count.

A LF BG does not get support shooting. If the LF are rear ranks supporting HF or MF they get to shoot if the chargers are mounted, but in effect only 1 dice per 2 LF bases. There are some restrictions on weapon types. See pp98-99.

Read the relavent section on support shooting in the impact phase. Front rank bases use their impact POAs second or third rank use shooting POAs with an extra (-) for shooting in the impact phase. ("--" is the worst they can shoot.)
