I made a change to the message and map marker settings and now most map markers are gone and will not come back. No on-map pop growth marker, no building completed marker, no raid marker, no plague marker, etc. I've tried every possible combination of message, marker and notification settings and nothing brings them back. The only way to get such notifications is to turn on All sidebar notifications, and you can imagine how rapidly that turns into an unmanageable barrage of notifications for a large empire.

Any ideas what I need to try next to get the map markers back?

Still can't get all of the map markers back. Thinking this might be a bug because the game is just about unplayable in the mid-latter stages as the map markers _used_ to help keep the notifications list sensible, and you use the map markers to scan common events geographically. (It's as if it was designed that way! IKR!)

What combination of message settings are other people using? Maybe I missed one - don't think I did but you never know. And knowing what settings combos definitely do work (in other games) would help narrow down what's going on.

In the option menu, have 'on map indicators' set to messages only, or even all. This way, messages will translate to icons on the map. 'All' add an extra indicator, a rotating 3D ones for very important messages, but I don't use it personally.

If you like the side notifications,to the right, in the 'notifications' drop down list, be sure to be at standard or even all.

Now, in the game itself, bring the message panel. There is a first group of 6 buttons to the left, be sure to not have selected a specific category, or you'll see only this category.
Then there is a group of 3 buttons, click on the left one showing a single person.
On the next group of three buttons, representing scrolls, I would advise setting either high or medium. Medium if you are a grognard ...
Last group, only 2 buttons, left one.

It was the message panel settings at the bottom - I didn't realise they filtered map icons too.

Oh, that's beautiful. It's like I've been playing for hours in the dark!
