foot men at arms in 4s or 6s

I have played several games using my foot men at arms, armoured, sup, drilled, hvy W in BG size of four stands. I know the consensus is to use them in fours but I am beginning to rethink this mainly due to the low number of dice they roll there is a huge variation in the melee out come.
The advantages of fours are manoeuverability and an extra BG or two in your army increasing break points. Disadvantage only rolling four dice melee which means you cause about 2.25 hits per turn. Generally not enough the remove an enemy base and can easily out rolled by a six base BG. Do players think it is worth the disadvantages to move up 6 base BGs to improve their hitting power?
