I've justed install on an Acer 5920G laptop running at 1280x800 and repeatedly get a pop up saying DisplayInfo.RB_GetScreenIndex - did not find monitor 0,0,1280,800
Can anyone tell me what the problem is please? Is there a patch out there as makes the game really unpleasant to play.

Sorry you are having problems. Can you tell us the version you are using. It's shown bottom right on the main menu.
When exactly does this problem occur? Have you tried running the game in windowed mode - it might solve the issue?

I believe it is 1.02 out of the box - I cannot find any updates as it is the Military History version.
I tried Windowed and that just gives me the map on the left hand side of the screen and a black background on the right and when I leave the game my desktop doesn't reappear until I reboot.
I have change to Windows XP Compatibility mode and that makes the messages less persistent (after about a dozen of them it seems happy to leave on sitting in the background somewhere).

It sounds like you have a laptop? Laptops are notorious for having dodgy graphics cards which may be the issue. Either way, the first thing to is check you have the latest drivers for your graphcis card - if they are old it can cause a variety of problems.

Just checking, in main menu does it say "CEAW 1.02" in the bottom right corner?

I'll have to check what version it actually reports when I get home.
It is a laptop & this would be the first thing to have a problem - I have both some ancient software (Empire in Arms, Empire Earth & new stuff eg Prince of Persia).
Interesting re the graphics drivers as I have tried to raise that with Acer because they haven't released new drivers for an age and do indicate installing the manufacturer drivers onto a laptop would be less than sensible, surprise surprise when I asked when they intend to release new drivers they forgot to answer.

Forgive me, please, for sticking my nose in here uninvited, but I noticed you said the resolution was 1280x800, which seems to me like a very odd resolution.
Does CEAW support that 1280x800 format?

I've still not checked the version of the software - ever since install (definitely the only thing installed) I've hand Vista hanging when I exit programs and sometimes just at random - nothing in the event log - something seriously broken.
1280x800 is a normal resolution for widescreen.

It should run fine on this resolution - it will be stretched but it should work. To test this is not the issue can you try editing the settings.txt file in the MyDocs\CEAW folder. Change "WINDOWED_MODE 0" to WINDOWED_MODE 1". This forces it to run in a window. If this folder does not exit, try CEAW_FASTPLAY. If this folder also does not exist go to the folder you installed the game to and edit the settings.txt file there.
You could also try right clicking on the icon and saying "Run as Administrator".

let's be honest it's not playing the game that is my problem now, it's become fixing my vista machine which appears well and truly screwed since the install - unfortunately with nothing appearing in the eventlog I'm really rather stumped unless the software introduced some nasty I cannot find.

Vista can be a pain for gaming - it updates itself with things you don't necessarily want and can't turn these updates off
If the probelms are Vista related there is not much we can do I'm afraid

Can you try setting your desktop resolution to 1024x768 and see if this helps? Someone else had a similar problem and this fixed it. If that is the issue we'll try and find out what is causing it.

Do you have Spyder screen calibration installed? Try uninstalling it. Then reinstall if required?
