Andalusian vs Merovingian

Our first battle since the publication of Wolves from the sea, involves Andalusian vs Merovingian.
The Andalusian commander Al Jior-Jio choose it’s army keeping in mind to use his cavalry as impact force, with some large group of LH and berber medium foot to take care of rough terrains. A solid block of supported defensive spearmen will give a solid base. A general ally TC with a 4 base LH will try to flank march.

Andalusians

2 TC's, 1 FC, 1 ally TC.
3 x 4 Jund Cavalry, Cv, armored, Superior, drilled, lancers, swordsmen
2 x 6 Andalusian Cavalry, LH, unprotected, average, undrilled, javelins, Light Spear
3 x 6 Spearmen, HF, protected, average, drilled, defensive spearmen
3x3 Supporting archers, LF, unprotected, average, undrilled, bow
2 x 6 Berber Spearmen, MF, protected, average, undrilled, light spear
2 x 6 Archers, LF, unprotected, average, undrilled, bow
1x4 Arab Cavalry, Cv, protected, superior, undrilled, lancers, swordsmen
1x4 Berber ally Cv, LH, unprotected, average, undrilled, javelins, light Spear

The Merovingians, commanded by the pius Fabiogibert, try to get as much as they can from their shocking troops, with four BG of Armoured Lancers and 4 BG of offensive spearmen. They too have a single BG of LH on flank march. This is not such a surprise I do both lists, and I’m quite interested in trying the flank march mechanism.

Merovingian
1 TC, 2 FC’s, 1 ally TC
4x4 Frankish Cavalry, Cv, armored, Superior, undrilled, lancers, swordsmen
4x8 Spearmen, HF, protected, average, undrilled, offensive spearmen
1x4 Breton cavalry, Cv, armored, Superior, undrilled, light spear, swordsmen
1x4 Light Horse, LH, unprotected, average, undrilled, javelins, Light Spear
1x6 Archers, LF, unprotected, average, undrilled, bow
1x6 Javilinmen, LF, unprotected, average, undrilled, javelins, light spear
1x4 Ally Breton cavalry, LH, unprotected, average, undrilled, javelins, light spear

I’m sorry I cannot place a picture of the starting position, but if someone bring the camera without batteries it’s quite difficult to use it in a proper matter… Fortunately, in Italy every player have some batteries in is bag when playing wargames, so we manage to have pictures after the first move.

Image
This one is after the first andalusian's move.
The plan of Al Jior-Jio is to push on is left side, using his MF to get control of the brush in the middle of the field of battle. Also the flank march i intended to enter on the left, and... surprise surprise... a well thrown 10 makes the berber enter the battle immediately... you can see them in theri blue coats in the bottom corner... you are right theri near a Lithuanian tape, but that is only a remembrance of my last torunament in Bassano del Grappa, where the sons of Casimir didn't behave as well as I desired.
The supported spearmen are back near my belly waiting to see how the situation will evolve.
From the merovingian side one BG of Spearmen, supported by Frankish Cavalry, boldly face the well dressed Jund cavalry, while the big block of three spearmen BG is moving forward the andalusian counterpart...
The andalusian LH try to menace the flank of the frankish cavalry, while the frnakish LH, can be seen in the center behind the rough, are still confused on what to do...
Image
Same situation from an other point of view. Guys, if you don't like the pictures put the blame on my brother!

Image
Things are moving fast. The Frnakish cavarly react to counter the LH and their left and right, while the LH are trying to intercept the flank march. On the other side of the brush 3 BG of Frankish lancers are heading towards the maybe too much timid spearmen, while the LF understand that they need to be placed on double line to disturb the merovingian horse.
The rough in the center is clearly in the and of the andalusian... it's only matter of time....

Image
Now things are getting serious. The Jund cavalry move towards the spear without any fear... the blue guys still heading for the frankish camp, and maybe some javelins from the LH will create some problems to the superior cavalry on the left, ready to evade as soon they will be charged...

Image
On the other side the spearmen are ready to charge the LH and the armoured cavalry will make the Lf evade, keeping the arabs spearmen in their mind...

Image
Time to charge for the guys from France. And time to evade for the defender of islam... Yes that big nose on the upper right of the pictures is mine...

Image
The clask between the spearmen and che lancers doesn't go as the frankish general would expect. Dosrupted at the impact and one dead, then two levels down to bring them directly to rout... the andalusian cavalrymen are more then pleased to follow up....

Image
Only to get the spearmen on the back and some fresh frankish cavalry... the left push of the andalusian is going to work... at least for now

Image
But isn't a bed of roses for the Al Jorg-Jor boys... the frankish cavalry is getting close to the spear, LF as usual free from their charge, and some well aimed shot from the LF archers have disrupted the single jund cavalry on the far right... the LH are trying the menace the flank of the Breton cavalry... while the MF changed thier direction to treathen the frankis mounted troops... alas maybe they are too fast for them...

Image
Now it's time to keep pressure on the right Frankish flank.... maybe those light horse guys with their javelins could do the job....

Image
Oh My, Oh My... as I always say a good player it's a good player :D
armoured lancers with one dead and loosing one step of cohesion who can ask for more?

Image
While the spearmen are vanished and the frankish cavarly is going to follow ther foot fellows in a couple of turns, the overall Merovingian commander Fabiogibert it's start to thinkin' "Why did I stop playing DBMM?"

Image
Finally the frankish cavalry on the right of the analusian continget manage to reach the supported spearmen, disrupting them at the impact... but avoiding to do more damege in the meele fase... but that explain us why the andalusian commander didn't put too mauch hoping on them to win the battle... meanwhile also the fankish flank march entered the field... but was scared by the LF archers...

Image
Fabiogibert... is keeping to move forward his spearmen... but it's just a mare illusion... his army is crumbling down... when it's camp it's about to be sacked by the berber raiders...

Image
And now the Coup de grace! Defensive spearmen charging the breton cavalry on the flank... the LH refuse to do it, maybe because the prefere to avoid to to ruin their beautiful clothes with those infedel blood...

After all a very enjoyable game... I'm sorry for my english that didn't allow me to use more poetical words, and for the fact that it's only my point of view that you can read... anyway my first game with andalusian it's was worthy, I have to say the luck was on my side this time... who knows what will happen next time...
Hope you enjoy reading this as I do writing...
one last consideration, I think that Field of Glory as given a new, and more interesting view of the Hobby... I stopped playing for two years and it's a real pleasure to get back on tables....
giorgio

PS: During the game a doubt about the rules arise, but I will posting it, with pictures on the propere place....

Nice AAR and the pictures are fine.

Your dice with the lancers against the light horse javelins would have resulted in a bad situation in any set of rules I know of but I do sympathise.

Great report, don't worry about your English, I'm sure many would agree your post was easier to read than many things written by so called English speakers !
