My Carthage was slicing up Hispania one faction at a time. The two largest remaining AI factions then united and declared war on me. Good job!

What was the difficulty setting? Just curious; the AI is usually quite placid around me once I get to a certain size.

Once you feel you are experienced in the game, then 'Balanced' is often too easy.
Experienced should be the level where the AI is not yet on steroid but has significant advantages that you'll overcome if you don't play casually, this would be the level I recommend for players with a decent knowledge of the game. Be warned though, a major change that can impact more or less some nations right from the start is that the experience stars on units will be factored in their upkeep. This can make an economy in the green go into the red, from balanced to experienced (Sparta...)
