Attack from close terrain

Hi Devs and Players, can someone explain this to me, or maybe this is a minor error.
In the combat log, it always shown up when a unit in a close terrain attack other units. Is this bonus mentioned in the manual? What is that represent for?
However, the funny thing is that even the air unit can get this bonus... so a fighter on top of a city can get more kills compare to the same unit on the open terrain...

Inf has the special trait that allows it to access the Close defense of a target, when fighting in a hex with Close terrain.

Somewhat similar, plane with the low attack trait attacking vs AA with the same trait, then the AA uses CD of target.

Typically planes do less damage vs a city bc of the entrenchment there.

Terrain in this game has two types: Close and Clear.

* Close terrain is cities, hills, forests, swamps, etc.
* Clear terrain is open fields.

Super, super short version:
* All units have zero defense in close terrain, except Engineers / Pioneers.
* This makes tanks terrible on close terrain because they trade evenly (or worse) with infantry, and are far more expensive.
* Non-encircled Infantry that sit still in Close Terrain are essentially invincible against anything except engineers supported by artillery.

*On Clear terrain, infantry do essentially zero damage to tanks.
*This makes Tanks the kings of Clear terrain.

So you want to have a well-organized formation:

#1 - you need Anti-tank support for your infantry as it advances across an open field so it doesn't get slaughtered.
#2 - you need artillery support for any unit you have in Close Terrain so it doesn't get slaughtered by infantry.
#3 - You need tanks to master the Clear terrain.
#4 -You need infantry (specifically engineers) to master the Close terrain.
#5 - You need artillery support for any attack on infantry entrenched in Close Terrain in order to dislodge them.
#6 - You usually want anti-air somewhere in there to discourage airplane attacks on your artillery and tanks. Otherwise they get slaughtered by planes.

I think that might be a bug and I've already reported it in the Bug Report thread.

Aircraft getting this bonus is a bug which is now fixed. The fix will be included in the next update.

As for what it represents, well... close terrain is terrain with limited vision, so attack from such terrain is harder to predict, it's more likely to be a surprise attack. Small bonus to initiative represents this.

Thanks Alex, that makes sense, and is similar to what I thought in the beginning.

As I’m going through the campaign I’ve noticed there actually are some other units with close defense. Panzer III ausf. N has some. Not a lot (6 or something?) but still it’s there nevertheless.

Yeah, different units have SOME but I was giving the 20 second version. If you act like only Engineers have anything other than zero Close Defense, you're pretty close to the mark on your decisionmaking.
