Downside to unit trade deals?

I confess to not having bothered trying to figure it out. It seems almost like cheating when someone offers me money, MP and Metal for an African War elephant?
The only downsides are you have to pay 75 gold per unit (I think ? It's quite easy to check in game) and you may face said units later if you end up at war with the other faction
But globally I tend to always accept such requests, except if they come from a faction I intend to fight later on
