AI attacking with bad odds?

I have had a lot of enemy AI units attacking unnecessarily with bad odds and taking loses of 5-7 units for 1-2 kills. Is this normal? There are also highly entrenched enemy units coming out of cover to attack my unit, and losing all 10 entrenchment.

The soviets only care about ultimate victory, not the body count.

Yeah, sometimes they do, but I have also seen several situations where it's the opposite, when they don't attack and just sit still, looking at my units (aux units in the most recent case) for several turns, doing nothing.
