Destroying the Brest Fortress

In the first mission of Barbarossa, playing Army Group Center you are tasked with taking some objectives. The briefing mentions the Brest Fortress, but in the mission it's not actually a main objective.
The manual reveals that the markings on the hex indicate it as a secondary objective. The mission doesn't list anything about a secondary objective though, and destroying and taking the fortress doesn't seem to have any immediate effect. Any special reason why i should destroy it? Am i missing something? Or is it just a bug from a time where it was a secondary objective but that got removed?
Thank!
Night Phoenix

I would also be interested to get to know which bonus you get for destroying the fortress.
To be honest I would appreciate if in general it would be clear from the start what you get for all bonus objectives.
I know you can go look up a dedicated campaign tree here in the forum for some additional information but in my opinion a lot of crucial information is already
all over the place in PC2. I understand that it`s difficult to find a good place for all information/stats/etc with more advanced features in PC2 but I personally feel like I have to manually gather a lot of information to fully understand the mechanics etc. I would appreciate if the game and it`s details would be more intuitive.
Thanks everyone an I am looking forward for upcoming patches since I absolutely love the new game mechanics.
If the UI, graphics and features (MP,...) are getting constant improvements this game will become the best Panzer General style game of all time

Blew it up with Big Karl.
Can't say I noticed any special reward.

Big Karl costs 10 campaign slots (out of 64) - hard to justify if there is no reward.

Only reward is prestige points (300 or 400 I dont remember) . IMHO attacking Fortress Brześć is a waste of resources.

Karl with Hero giving two attacks is cool. Only in the first Sealion mission I sent him in reserve. And then take back to army. Worth every slot, as I think.

The rail guns are awesome. I think the rail gun is basically the only reason I won Stalingrad. I will admit I didn't even think of giving him the double-attack hero, but now I know what I'm going to do the next time I get in the game.

I have plans to add Rapid fire hero to double attack. Got him after first Sealion. But maybe it'll be too overpowered.

It makes the game into what I like to call a 'point and click adventure' : you point at it, click on it, and it dies.

So I bought Karl Gustav for 3000 prestige (!) and 7 core slots. It helped a bit on the first city you attack (Brest-Litovsk?) and then spent the rest of the game demolishing the 20 HP fortress for 3-5 steps each turn. (I was worried the fort would fire like those range 3 forts in Norway, but it is like a bunker - range 1). Karl was too slow to catch up with the rest of army. I gained 100 prestige for taking the fortress. Not really worth it, but it is a unique unit and I can put the gun into my reserves and sell it if need be (one way of banking the 3000 XP you need for the ahistorical WW2 victory path on General difficulty).
Facing Kiev now, which looks a tougher nut to crack that Brest Litvosk. I have to say, I am wondering whether to actually deploy big Karl and not put it into reserve just yet.

I didn't purchase Karl. After my first playthrough, I ended up hammering away with a Stuka, a 105mm, a Pioniere, a HW Infantry, and a Wher Infantry. That's a lot of forces drawn away for that task. However, I seized Pinsk and kept my cavalry there to keep the Soviet infantry from marauding around my rear. I took me many turns to smash Brest, it was cutting it close though as the rest of my forces didn't catch up until around Vitebsk and aided me in my two pronged assault on Smolensk which I seized on the last turn.

To answer my original question, I think the key thing is not whether or not you bother with the Brest fortress - it's whether you purchase Karl Gustav (not sure if it is available to buy after this scenario, I presume not).
At first I was very put off by the price tag and 7 core slot price, but then I recalled using it in the PzC GC and realised it would be a very useful part of your core. Its particularly good for taking down heavy forts etc but can also kill other tough difficult enemies like Kv1s, T34s or heavily entrenched infantry etc. Quite a few maps are likely to be a bit of a slugfest (Moscow, Sevastapol and Stalingrad), and if it more open warfare, then you just put it in reserve. The core slot cost of 7 is not punitive, given that 4 range artillery tank up 6 slots.

It's a prototype unit. It remains in your purchase window for later.

Yeah, I ended up taking care of Brest without it but I was really happy that I could still buy it later. I purchased it for Moscow where it was invaluable. First in breaking through to take the city, and then during the Soviet counter attack it was great at hammering on KV1s and KV2s.
Also used it later on in Sevastopol to good effect in conjunction with the Gustav.
