Hi,

I have been working on a couple of Dublin Viking lists from WFTS. Appreciate some comment on how people think they would survive against all-comers.

List 1

3x TC (including CnC) plus Norse-Irish Ally TC

4x 4 Huscarls - HF, Sup, Und, Arm, HW with 2 Supp. Archers - LF, Sup, Und, Unprot, Bow
4x 8 Freemen - HF, Av, Und, Prot, Off Sp
2x 6 Irish - MF, Av, Und, Unprot, HW

Ally:

2x 6 Norse-Irish Warriors - MF, Av, Und, Unprot, HW
2x 6 Norse-Irish Warriors - LF, Av, Und, Unprot, Jav, LSp
1x 6 Norse-Irish Levies - LF, Poor, Und, Unprot, Jav, LSp

List 2

3x TC (including CnC) plus Norse-Irish Ally TC

3x 6 Huscarls - HF, Sup, Und, Arm, HW
4x 8 Freemen - HF, Av, Und, Prot, Off Sp
2x 6 Irish - MF, Av, Und, Unprot, HW
1x 6 Thalls - Mob, Poor, und, Unprot

Ally:

2x 6 Norse-Irish Warriors - MF, Av, Und, Unprot, HW
2x 6 Norse-Irish Warriors - LF, Av, Und, Unprot, Jav, LSp
2x 6 Norse-Irish Levies - LF, Poor, Und, Unprot, Jav, LSp

Happy to listen to any other suggestions.

Cheers

Pete

Hi PLC,

I'd be interested for you to let me know how the BG's of 4 Huscarls and 2 Archers go. Personally, I would have thought they were too weak. There is just too big a risk in having BG's of 6 when it's your main attacking force. Too easy to get 1HP3B in shooting, even though they are armoured.

I took them in 6 Huscarls and 3 Archers and they are tough as nails. Maybe too tough. So maybe you're approach is better (in that you will be able to get more BG's that way).

That's a lot of allied BGs to be handled by one commander. Are they just BG count filler?

Have you also looked at a Norse Irish army with Viking Ally as an alternative?

:)

He does seem to have a lot of Irish in his Viking list doesn't he?

Perhaps you're right - it should be Viikings in his Irish list.

Taking onboard what you've said, would the following be better.

3x TC (including CnC) plus Norse-Irish Ally TC

3x 6 Huscarls - HF, Sup, Und, Arm, HW with 3 Supp. Archers - LF, Sup, Und, Unprot, Bow
2x 8 Freemen - HF, Av, Und, Prot, Off Sp
2x 6 Freemen - HF, Av, Und, Prot, Off Sp
2x 6 Irish - MF, Av, Und, Unprot, HW

Ally:

2x 6 Norse-Irish Warriors - MF, Av, Und, Unprot, HW
2x 6 Norse-Irish Warriors - LF, Av, Und, Unprot, Jav, LSp
1x 6 Norse-Irish Levies - LF, Poor, Und, Unprot, Jav, LSp

The ally is down to 5 BGs (one of which is pure filler).
The main fighting troops are split into 3 Groups of effectively 9....with a TC assigned to each.

Hello PLC,

I have been working on a Norse-Irish list with a Viking ally, which does not appear to be all that different from what you are doing. The first thing I would do is drop the supporting archers, they only count on impact if you get charged by cavalry, and even then they only get one die per 2 bases with an extra minus to whatever poa they would have had. I would put the Huscarls in units of 8, that way whoever you are fighting needs to get 3 hits to cause a test instead of just 2. Same with the Freemen.

If I remember correctly, the viking list has a provision for putting Norse-Irish troops directly into the army, which may be a good idea because whenever you take an ally, you have to sacrifice some command and control.

post again with what you have found out through your battles.
