From the french spoeaking forum :

Do the supported unit have to SEE the suporting unit ( the supporting unit is in a wood, plantation , behind a hill ,... but within the 8 or 12 MU ) .

As far as I am concerned they just have to be there. The rules say nothing about visibility for support, just: distance, troop type supporting/supported, facing and numbers.

No.

We considered that in general troops would have reasonable awareness of where friends were. Otherwise you end up with some horrible vsisbility issues to deal with.

I would say the same, too. Still, this is not a silly question: it's enough to suppose your support should be there? Of course it's just a platonic question, since for me it's not important for game purpose.

It might lead to some interesting situation if the terrain between the 2 units is an impassable mountain 8)

Indeed, but this is another example of a situation in which we decided not to complicate the rules.

if the terrain between the 2 units is an impassable mountain
Well they would at least feel that their rear was secure

I would say the same, but luckily I never found in this situation!
