Making yourself a "Training Ground" . . .

I write quite a few scenarios so I know how to do this quickly. I use my Training Ground quite a lot, not only for scenario design, but for testing out things with various units against different types of opponents.

To set one up for yourself, here are the bare-bones Basics . . .

Click on "Editor"; then "New"; enter TrainingGround in Campaign folder name and Campaign name; Click on "Proceed", then "Select"; choose your Base Terrain Style; Click on "Make a New Empty Map".

And there you have your basic Training Ground.

To put units on this training ground you use the third icon along in the top row called "Unit placement mode". Left-click to activate Side 0 (Red), left-click again to activate Side 1 (Blue). Choose the units that you want to "train" with from the lists on the left hand side of the screen.

To place a unit on the map, left-click on the text giving the unit name and it will highlight, then left-click on a map square to place the unit. To delete a unit depress the delete button on your keyboard and left-click. Note that units placed for Side 1 (Blue) will be facing the wrong way at first. Move mouse pointer onto the square with the unit and then press the "r" key on your keyboard to rotate the unit. You do not need to put generals on the training ground for it to work.

Once you have got to grips with the units you may want to "train" on different types of terrain. Again, this is quite simple. Use the two other icons in the top row alongside "Unit placement mode". On the left is "Tile placement mode", which is divided into Base and Overlay and the middle button is "Object placement mode". Use Base for rough grounds and woods (add Forest from "Object placement mode"); use Overlay for streams and marsh; and Object placement mode for Forest and Village. That's all you need to start with.

Then click on "Save", using the icon at the bottom in the middle. Enter TrainingGround in the box. Leave the Editor.

To start your training, click on 2nd small button at the top on the left called "Game Settings and Preferences" and enable Hotseat by clicking on the left tab. Then go to Battles - Epic Battles - Training Ground - Launch - Accept and begin your training session.

For any more information about using the Editor please visit the Scenario Forum where Paul59 has provided excellent and exhaustive instructions on how to do practically everything else.

Thanks a lot Pete. It is useful for new players to know the different units of the game. :D

Very helpful thanks. Always wondered how to do this. Look forward to training a new army for next season!

Right, that is 2 players who are going to be shooting up the FOG2 Digital League next season. Anyone else using the "Training Ground" now?

One of the interesting things to test out is the durability of the various units. We might know that huscarls will beat average shieldwall and average shieldwall will beat Brythonic foot in the open, but how long will the inferior unit hold out? How long will it be (on average) before a routed inferior unit starts to cause cohesion tests for friendly units? Also, how long will hirdsmen (spear) last against huscarl (axe)? Some of the answers are fairly astonishing once you understand the range of possible outcomes.

Excellent info and very helpful. Thanks a lot. I have been messing around with it. It would be great if you could 'reset' and restart the battle without having to quit and come back in..

Save it when you first load it up.

Then just load the Save to restart it.
