We are in the stages of planning this year's Northern Classic with a provisional date of the weekend of 6 December

Dave has put a post out to the Slitherine UK group but I will go through our proposal in a little more detail below.

We wish to do something a little different and encourage as many players as possible to attend. Our two main proposals are set out below.

Please if you have chance comment on what you would prefer, which you are more likely to turn up for

Option 1
A pool of armies with a bonus for some of them
A themed competition of between 800 and 900 points. The army lists allowed in the theme will be ranked.
Those of lowest ranking will gain extra army points towards their construction so as to encourage poorer and less used armies to appear.
For example LRR would get no bonus points, Carthaginian 40 bonus points, Ancient Spanish 80 (the bonuses are not yet decided but that is the idea)

Option 2
Matched pairs of armies
MAWS will provide all the armies
As many differing army types as possible will be represented
These armies will be matched historical enemies specifically designed to fight each other
Players will play each round using a different army against a different opposing army
For Example Serbian v Ottoman, Byzantine v Seljuk, Ilkhanid v Mongol, Burmese v Malayan

Option 2 would mean I wouldn't get my list wrong :D
Don't mind either option ,2 is the easier one for visitors but you would have to be very careful with the match ups

If you did it as a doubles competition you could have double matched pairs i.e. one of the partners plays Serbian vs Ottoman and the other plays Ottoman vs Serbian. That way any bias in the match up evens out. You could also have unequal points that way.

Good idea
But means we need 2 of each army. Still doable unless we get too many entries and we never know how many
However singles means each player using more different armies with much more varied MO

Some ideas for Option 1:

(A) Steppes.
Any army with Steppes in its territory choices or their historical opponents. Cavalry designated as Horse Archers may be fielded as unprotected LH instead. 800 points on a 6x4.

(B) Armies and Enemies of Rome.
Any Roman or opposing army from 300 BC to 300 AD. Bring one army of each and receive a 30 point bonus. If you bring two and your opponent only has one then use the appropriate opposition. If both players have two then dice to see who uses the Romans.
800 (or 830) on a 6x4. Further bonus for certain less popular/successful armies. E.g., Carthaginian +50, Picts +100 etc as agreed by discussion.

The Northern Classic 2020

MAWS are pleased to announce this event will take place on 5th and 6th December at The Forge, Unit 1, Kestrel Rd, Trafford Park, Stretford, Manchester, M17 1SF The venue is a superbly fitted out gaming centre with all the facilities needed, including a licensed bar and a modern central heating/air conditioning system. It's within easy reach of the area's motorway system.

There's a poll now running on this forum to decide the theme, with Steppes currently in the lead, so it might be time to dust off those neglected cavalry armies!
