Hi All,

In Late Medieval (December 1499 - just before the book turns into a pumpkin) armies how common was it for lances and pikes to have flags and pennants flying? I can't imagine anything more impressive looking but totally cumbersome to have than a flag or pennant flying from your lance or pike tip.

The reason I'm asking is that I think they look particularly nice, but don't want to be TOO wrong with my army.

The army will have Landsknects and Knights, hence the question.

i say go to town.

too much historical accuracy makes for extremely dull looking armies.

this is a "tripod" hobby. you gotta have a nice army, a nice handle on the history (which requires research), and fun playing the games.

Yeah, well, in an earlier post just sent today I also said "Don't let the truth get in the way of a good paint job, so I see where you're coming from.

I'm thinking something in the order of 1-2 nice long ribbon style off a lance tip and several proper flags per pike file as well as the occasional ribbons as well.

There are loads of well illustrated books and hundreds of illustrations on line. A few minutes research will get what you want.

Essentially a pennant on every gendarmes lance (only one), and 2-6 flags in the middle of each pike block (surrounded by halberdeers rather than pikemen, blocks are 400-600 troops minimum).

yup. i have banners far too large for a man to hold attached to some pikes. you'll need a 4x4 to lift the thing in the wind!

but, c'est la vie.
